its NITROUS unless you are using the brand NOS.

first off, hopefully its a forged bottom end iron block 408.
if it is, it just depending on money. a direct port nitrous setup is the most expensive nitrous setup you can get and it still will be like 1/4 of the price of a well built turbo setup.

Do you want to spend $500-800 or $5000-8000?

You don't need anything fancy to run the times you want when you're already going to have a 408. It would only take a small shot of nitrous to run that consistently. A turbo setup would get you WAY beyond the goal that you stated.

Use a bottle per track night for 10 track nights a year, and takes 10 years to add up to 5,000 It doesn't add up that fast. Even if you track it a LOT and use more nitrous than the average street car (let's say double) it will still take 5 years to add up.

I think it would be good to know what compression ratio you're building the 408 at. If you're planning on running the spray, you'd want a higher compression ratio than if you want to go turbo.

The next thing to know is your budget for the build...

not enough info no the car or the build of the motor.
comparing turbo to nitrous is not a good comparison.
they're two different animals.
my bone stock LS1 Camaro with a 125 shot will set you back in the seat hard and runs high 11's @ 119 in the 1/4 mile.
as far as budget goes, nitrous systems will range from $450-$1200+ depending on how mild or wild you what it. nitrous is the most and best bang for the dollar.
turbos will range from $8000-15000+ depending on how mild or wild you what to go. both nitrous and turbos have both powered some of the fastest street cars and race cars. this is what makes it hard to say one is better than the other. i now two guy who both run a 7 secound car, one is 100mm turbo LSX car and the other is a big C.I.D. SBF with a BIG two stage nitrous set up. both are super fast and both rebuild the motors every 2-3 years.

I would go turbo if it was me. Yeah ok so nitrous is cheap and it would take a long time to add up to the price of a turbo kit but I don't know about where you live but nitrous is hard to find out here. Plus nitrous is hard on a motor compared to turbo. Plus, I have the power on tap at all times and not having to worry about if my bottle is full or do I have enough pressure with my heater on. Then one other thing you have to add versus nitrous fill is that add up the price of kit and the headers you buy plus a timing tuner and the price of a bottle heater and it adds up to half the price of a turbo kit from turbo technology.

I ran a 10.4 @130 with 566rwhp with a heavy car.
I have a stock ls1, a mild to nicely built 408 with a 150 shot should have no problems exceeding your goals. I would not advise turbos from your posts.

As others have said depends on your budget and what you have done to the car. I would say go with a forged 408 with a higher compression than on a turbo car (Say 10:1 or higher) and then a direct port N20 kit with all the saftey items and spray a 150-175 shot and you will easily see the times your looking for. This way you can spend the additional cash on a clutch/tranny/rear/suspension setup that can handle the power. If you already have the rest of your setup done then it really comes down to what you want.

Turbo in my opinion is better in the long run. Nitrous is good if want it now. Seeing that you have the money to build a 408, put some money into a turbo. You don't have to worry about backfires and intake manifold desgin type stuff. Boost and get it tuned. No worries about trying to open the bottle and such.

I don't know about current prices of nitrous vs. turbo systems. I am certain, however, that the upfront costs of a turbo are significantly higher. However, I went turbo for the reasons above. First, I have heard of folks grenading their engines by misusing nitrous. I personally saw a ricer do just that last month (no big loss, of course ). And the always on tap finished the sale for me. I never have to worry about the heater, turning the bottle on, etc. JMHO.

Dry DP will all but eliminate backfires.
