Talking So Shawn at VA speed tore down my turbo motor...

Background:
Block is a .010 over LS2
Crank is a Callies Magnum XL (stock stroke)
rods are GRP aluminum
Pistons are coated JE pieces
Heads are box-stock ETP 225s
Motor made 1213RWHP at 24 psi, but I've run upwards to 27psi at times
Car went 171 mph @ 3450 lbs with a pretty inefficient converter (which we are addressing)

I took the motor down to Va Speed on Saturday and we tore it down to assess how happy/unhappy the motor was at the ~1400 FWHP level...

First we pulled the heads. I run the GM 5-layer 6.2L gaskets. There was no evidence of cross-cylinder blowby. There was minor leakage into the water jacket (at the bottom of the gasket) on cylinders 3 and 4. There is a strong possibility that I did that on my last run when I got very aggressive on the tuneup (not the 171mph pass) These gaskets at 40 runs on them!

We turned the motor over and pulled the pan. Pulled all the pistons and saw no evidence of bearing issues other than a tad bit of dirt went thru the bearings (motor sat for several years assembled before an oil pan was put on so thats probably the source of the dirt). Pistons looked VERY good in Shawns opinion

Pulled the main caps. For whatever reason, the caps were not pinned (I didn't spec out the motor) and the caps walked pretty severely Main bearings were VERY good. No evidence of crank or block flex. Thrust surfaces were also VERY good considering its a turbo car!

We will be putting it back together pretty much with the same parts except we will be doweling the mains. Who says an aluminum block won't work at that power level

I'm sure Shawn can chime in for any specifics since all the parts are at his shop...

No...they didn't originally build this motor...I bought this motor second-hand from someone else (never fired)

Well, sounds like whoever did build the motor did a pretty good job.

Do you think the aluminium rods have worked as a shock absorbers?

4 bolt heads will only live to 1000hp
it's amazing what you can do with the proper combination of parts.
The engine did look excellent on the inside(with exception of the cap walk)

LMAO!!! So true. Its nice to keep learning what these things will take. I took Mark Koehlers engine apart that had same results on alot more runs, but the thrust was hurt. It walked forward enough to contact the main webbing.

When you say LS2 block .010" over is that on stock liners?

How are your heads staying down so well when others have problems at a lower power level?

This is exactly the kinda thread I wanted to see keep us updated! Do you think pinning the mains will solve any possible crank walk/bearing issues?

Also have you thought about O-ringing the heads?

That's very encouraging. I'm about to embark on an experiment to test the limits of the ls7 block. Shawn is nearly finished with my setup now and we're looking to reach as high as the 1600fwhp level with an ls7 block and 4bolt heads...
