Default Low budget turbo questions

What turbo/wastegate would you guys use for an 800rwhp setup? It is going to be mostly street, with a 5.3 or LQ4 setup. IDK which transmission yet, I am leaning towards a t56, but cost would be the factor over a 4L60E/4L65E.

What would you do to the engine aside from swapping heads/cam/oil pump? What other bolts/gaskets would be recommended in changing? I already have the low compression 5.3 heads, along with the correct manifolds for the turbo setup.

Im sure I will be along with more questions, but I figure this will get me started at least.

Single/twin?

Thanks!

Unsure yet, IDK what vehicle it will be going into. We are thinking a 4th gen camaro or a 2nd gen S10. Either way, the turbo will be under the hood, chances are, where the battery would be located, if in stock location (it would be moved to the rear).

goodluck with a 60e at 800rwhp , a built t400/ 4l80e is pretty much mandatory at those levels. as far as the motor, might wanna at least change the rods and pistons for something more boost friendly. i think a t-76 would be pretty good for a 5.3 though im not sure youll hit 800rwhp with it unless you do 15psi+. the amount of boost you run has an impact on your wastegate selection but im a believer that your better off to oversize your gate than to undersize it and have boost creep.

I would very much PREFER a manual transmission, as I drive a 6 speed daily and LOVE it. IDK if a TKO650 would hold it, but a couple people I frequent have been talking about it. I did a little looking into beefing up a T56, and found a company that builds them to take 750+ rwtq, for $2500 (including cryo and all the other goodies), but that doesnt include a core.

Any link to rods/pistons you would recommend for a 5.3? We currently have an LQ4 in my dad's 1998 Jimmy, backed with a 4L60E. I have heard of the LQ4/LQ9's holding 1000hp on the bottom end, what would be required to ensure that it would hold? 800rwhp is idealy what I want, but I would be happy if I could achieve 700rwhp if it would save a lot of money.

Would a T-76 backed with a 38mm gate work well together? I plan on picking up a 5.3 and running it stock with the turbo to find out how much it will take.

Yes a TC76 with a Turbosmart 38mm gate will do the trick.

500 won't buy you a good 76mm turbo, but you can get one to sufice for now if need be.

Anyone who thinks a 4l60 is going to hold 800rwhp for any length of time is full of **** or poorly informed.

This has been discussed a million times. If you refer to the search feature at the top of the page it will save me a lot of time trying to explain this to you.

The Tial 50mm BOV's are pretty much the standard, and can be had for a little over $210.

If you are wanting to stay on a budget you might want to consider the new Master Power T76. The T70's were around $500, so i cant see the T76's being much more than than. Modularturbo, a sponsor on here, is a dealer for them and he has sales from time to time.

Thanks Z28. Are you talking about the t76's Modularturbo posted in this thread he made?

Yeah thats the one

I have no first hand experience with the Master Power turbos, but if i were going to do a custom build its most likely what i would go with. The price is right, and the guy that owns modularturbo has a great reputation for taking care of people if they have any problems with them (which was my first concern with buying a "cheap" turbo like that)

Good deal, thanks Z28. 1 last question (for now lol), anyone know who can make a decent custom dimension FMIC? There is very little room in an s10 for a FMIC, but I am gonna try, for the amount of boost I will be looking at.

So:

Master Power T-76
Turbosmart 38mm gate
Tial 50mm BOV

Those are the 3 biggest things. Anything other big things I am missing, other than the obvious (oil lines, etc etc)?

If you're going to buy an MP turbo, I'd recommend getting it from Modular Turbo. Rob and his people are awesome and they stand behind their products. They've proven themselves to me time and time again. Hence why I have their logo in my sig.

Hope this helps,
Vince

When i was shopping for FMIC's, ebay was about the best bet. You can find just about any dimension on there. Im sure im gona get flack for not promoting a sponsor, but its hard to compete with the chinese knock-off intercoolers on ebay... and unlike a turbo its self... the quality is still OK on knock-offs

Thanks Vince, I was planning on it, since the prices were the same between his thread and ebay's prices on the MP T-76's.

Thanks Z28. I will check it out.

If anyone else has anything else to add, please do. Im still looking for what motor stuff to upgrade. At the very least I am swapping to my low compression 5.3 heads, a Z06 cam (heard it was boost friendly), and new wrist pins (I heard they are only good to ~600hp).
