I have a 93 Camaro that I am setting up for the texas mile. Several years ago, I built a really nice motor for the car. Lt1, billet splayed caps, nice crank, Custom raised runner AFR's with Lt1 cooling passages cast in, custom solid roller from Job at Turbo people. I have a custom turbo setup for it which I was going to use a large from Precision turbo...possibly a Pt101 or such. I was looking to make 1300-1400rwhp reliably, enough power to run with SW's supra thats going 240+mph in the mile. Well, after recent research....It seems that alot of people are saying that the Lt1 block flex's too much above the 1000rwhp point....something I wish I had known when I spent all the cash building this motor several years ago!!!! So it looks like I am going to have to sell this motor, and go with a different setup to make this kind of power reliably. This is where my question comes in.
To make 1300-1500 rwhp and have a motor that will take it with no problems, should I look at a Lsx, Warhawk, or a BBC? I am a fabricator by trade, so making this setup work is no problem...I can build anything needed on either one of the motors. I was just wondering if a BBC would be more reliable at this power level, or will a LSX/Warhawk take that power with no problem? And which would be more affordible to build out of the 3? I don't know much about BBC's, but I have seen setups on Nelson Racing engines where they make 1000+ on pump gas with a BBC, and 2000+ on race gas. I realize that a LSX style motor would be alot easier to package...but I just want something that is bullet proof...I don't want to have to do this build again! Thanks for your input and any advice you might have!

I'm also focusing my build on the TX Mile. I'm running a custom LS7 from VA Speed and an F2 blower. The lsx or warhawk would be great choices and should reliably take that level of power. If you want a BBC bias then go to the BBC forums lol. Honestly though, with a BBC you'll have to run a cowl hood which will increase the aerodynamic coefficient.

Regardless of what you build, you are going to be whooping on the motor for a long period of time. Failures are bound to happen. Go with what you are comfortable working on and what parts are within your budget. Camaro's have a high Cd from what I remember and a decent frontal area, I think it's going to take more than 1400whp to achieve your goals. Also keep in mind that traction is going to be a key issue as well as proper Aero work. Better have all your I's dotted and T's crossed to chase down SW's car.
We've been doing mile events for a couple years now running in the 200-225 range and has been a blast every time we've been out.

my car is a mile car only now... no going back for me, with that said... the LSX is your answer, and make sure you go with methanol injection to quell crazy high IAT's by the end of the run... Methanol is the key...

well i think if your going to build a turbo motor right it needs to run on meth/alky.. boost loves it. and a nice intercooler would help. i plan on running the starquest as well.

Methanol injection is NOT a band aid when used properly! You want a good free flowing system before meth, and add the meth on top to cool the charge even farther and provide supplemental fuel. Same goes for a little shot of nitrous. There is nothing better for charge cooling! It also gives you a nice detonation cushion... Meth is simply a more forgiving fuel than gasoline.
I have been thinking a lot on a sequential dual fuel system that would actually use a mechanical fuel injection system with methanol as the secondary fuel... Basically above a certain PSI, the primary fuel system shuts off and the MFI takes over providing 100% methanol... This would be direct port injected and 100% automatic.
This guy's system is what gave me the idea and his work's flawlessly! It's the same concept, just mine would use an MFI system and Meth.

I have been thinking very hard about building a mile car too... there is something simply alluring about 200mph, and it is honestly one of my personal goals in life to do 200+mph. Rode along as a camera man for a 45-180mph run once, and it was one of the most insane experiences ever... after 140mph the world turns into a blur...

guys that don't understand about methanol can hate all you want... but for the rest of us in the know... well... we know...

I was mainly wondering if a properly setup 500ci bigblock would be less stressed at that power level than a Lsx motor. I don't know much about the BBC world...don't know how much the blocks can take, ect.
Another question.....what would be a good tranny to put behind a combination making that kind of power. I have seen the vipers that make 1300-1400rwhp will basicly trash the 5th gear with that much power. Is there a liberty style tranny that has overdrive that would work good? Or am I stuck running a t-56 style tranny?

Sure, a larger motor with good parts will require less boost to reach the same level. But you're looking at added weight, likely higher cost, and above all, alot more fabrication and special parts to put a BBC in an LS1 car.
Unless you want to spend 10K+ for a race only transmission, the T56 is where it's at. Check out Rockland Standard Gear. They make the only T56s that can live at super high power levels. They have several 1800hp vipers running the trans with no issues. It's called the tranzilla and that's whats in my car...custom gear ratios made from a harder alloy, dog ring (clutchless upshifting) synchros, etc etc.

I would either go with an LSX block or an ERL prepped aluminum block with 6 bolt heads. Either way get the blocks cryogenically treated and neither should ever give you an issue.
If you want 1000+ hp to live for that amount of time 6 bolt heads are a must...
These engines are different animals than BBCs, but both can be built to do what you want to do. Im pretty sure the ERL prepped LS2 would be the lightest weight option.
For landspeed style stuff, I would think a 6 speed would be more efficient.
Im sure a 4l80E can be built to do it though, but you're going to lose more HP through a 4l80 than you would a T56.
Gotta remember that land speed racing and drag racing are different animals all together. Friction, drag, weight, and are just as important as big HP at those kind of speeds.
