Ebay 4" vs brand name intercoolers (what are the 1000hp guys using?)
Anyone have any data? Looking to upgrade my i/c. I could get the 31x12x4 ebay intercooler for $160 shipped or I could buy an $850 32x12x5 ETS intercooler. I'm sure there is a difference in performance as I've seen some data on the ebay "CXRacing" intercoolers vs some other intercoolers.
The 4" core ebay setup is more my price range, but I wouldn't be opposed to a better intercooler IF it performs a lot better.
has anyone had one of the ebay's and then swapped to better i/c and seen a difference in IATs? How about 1000HP guys, what air/air intercooler are you running? Anyone swapped from the 3" to 4" core and seen a difference?
Am I going to be the first person to collect data and post an impenetrable wall text on this too? I need someone to sponsor me so I can do write ups on parts lol.
Right now i'm seeing a 50-55 degree rise in IATs on a 1/4 mile pass without methanol.

My FMIC cost a chunk, but we were seing great IAT's... 107 deg on an 85 deg day. When I asked questions about the IC I have there was several things that came into play... (this is of course third hand)... the direction of the core on the IC... if its direct left to right, the air passes across the surface area quicker thus loosing less heat, where as the vertical core (see pic) allows for better temp loss.. mine is rated for 1400RWHP... with the great performance we see out of it... I think its right.

The ETS core will be better than the EBAY core you are interested in simply because it is larger. The cores ETS typically use suck as well and will not perform much better than a good EBAY core when comparing identical sizes. Occasionally ETS will use a Garrett core for an I/C or if requested and that changes all of my said statements.
We've been using Garrett cores for a long time and they are the only cores to even consider running. They are a bit pricey but they work and work very well.

that is what my core started out as. The Threadstone cores have been used on a few 1000 rwhp cars around here as well. Great stuff for the price

Dammit, now you guys post about an affordable intercooler. I would have bought the treadstone 4.5" one for $315. At least this ebay one just bolts in to what I have now.
I guess if this ebay one doesn't drop my temps much I'll try the treadstone one. I'll have even more data then... sigh. Nothing like doing things multiple times. I'll be giving everyone here some more of my boring posts to read. 3" egay intercooler vs 4" egay intercooler.
Of course if this works out, then **** the world lol.

Its gonna be a couple weeks probably......I can get it done, when the intercooler comes in. The ambients are about to change alot here in Vegas, probably 15 degrees in the next 15 days, so well have to be careful on testing for comparison sake.
On a side note, I was seeing 66 degrees yesterday on the same intercooler zombie runs on a rear mount vette, with -34 degree wsher fluid (with meth) . Ambients, were 90-95.
Another rear mount turbo f body, sat night with the same intercooler zombie has, was seeing 105-110 on the dyno at 8 psi with the shop temp atleast that. A na car was showing iats in the 145 area.

if you're going to look at a pricey ic look at getting a bell core... the one i was looking at is about $600 for the core. i think that's what longrange4u's is. i know LMR uses them on their high hp stuff

Are you referring to TR12 Intercooler?
Not sure if rated hp is flywheel or rwhp.
3.5" core, 1142 CFM flow rate, 760hp efficient, 1.5psi drop
4.5" core, 1469 CFM flow rate, 980hp efficient, 1.5psi drop

Im running an ebay unit, seems to work fine althougt I have not tested the pressure drop across the core yet. I am also on a rear mount so temps arent so bad to start with, but when I ordered mine I did a lot of looking and reading and it seems if you were running less than about 35psi then the e-bay performs about the same as the more costly ones.
