Default Is stainless mandatory for turbo fab?

Just wondering if stainless pipe is mandatory for a turbo setup? I just don't want to buy a tig welder. I have a mig and an ac/dc arc welder. I know you can adapt the arc welder on dc to tig but its not worth it because it would be a scratch start. I am not new to welding. I went to school for it so I do know how to tig weld. Again I just don't want to have to buy a tig machine. Can you get by with just regular steel?

you can...but...even when coated, mild steel will rot from the inside out...don't expect it to last forever

Hot side or cold side? I know many people that use aluminum to save weight and they save A LOT of weight, but they compromise strength, IMO.

I just built a SS exhaust for my buddy's truck. I didn't have a tig available to me at the time so i bought a 2lbs spool of .030, 308 ss wire and a bottle of tri-mix gas and welded it with my little Millermatic 135 wire feed and it came out VERY nice. I was surprised how well SS MIGed with the right wire and gas.

So the mig with stainless was successful? I though about doing it at first but was worried about the weld quality. Maybe i'll do that with my hobart.

Of course SS can be MIG'd, as can aluminium ( although thats bloody difficult )

Half the stainless mufflers you see from various companies are MIG'd ( eg Magnaflow )

But TIG is more popular, as it produces more aesthetically pleasing welds for people buying shiny bits.

You can even just stick with mild steel wire....it will rust, but on something like an exhaust manifold...it will last a very very long time before it matters.
I dont know what you guys call it over there....but here the same gas does steel/SS, argoshield light ( something like 93% argon, 5% carbon dioxide, 2% Oxygen )

It looks like I will be running stainless wire through my hobart. Just have to pick up some tri-mix gas.

I talked to my gas guy to day and he said he though it was about 90% argon 7% CO2 and 3% helium.

I have been doing a lot of reading on why manifolds crack (not really the cast stuff) But I have been reading that if you want a turbo hear or hotside that is less likely going to crack you want to use a 16ga 321 stainless. I guess it contains titanium or something that helps with the tolerances.

I have heard of that sevan but you are now looking at exotic metals which is when you really need to get a tig welder.

kbracing96 thanks for getting back to me. Looks like i will be using a mig 304

[QUOTE=sevanseriesta;11598639]I have been doing a lot of reading on why manifolds crack (not really the cast stuff) [ /QUOTE]

It's called heat.

Eventually any metal subject to the hot/cold abuse ( and weight ) that turbo manifolds see will crack, unless its particularly special like Inconel.

Even cast manifolds can crack eventually. The more they are built with an ability to move freely during their expansion and contraction without stresses...the longer they will last.
