Has anyone tried using 6.0L truck coils instead of the standard LS1 coils? I heard they give a better spark for engines with high cylinder pressures. Is that true? What's the part number to those coils? Thanx

 

I would like to know this too. There's got to be a reason why GM uses different coils.

 

I have never heard of a difference in the coils as far as spark power. I have a 02 5.3 and an 01 6 liter and they both have the same coils. I broke a coil on the 5.3 so I had to order a new one (just yesterday) The dealer asked if I had the Delphi coil or the M?(not sure what he said) coil, so there are 2 different ones listed for the 5.3/6.0 They must be made different because the way he had me identify which kind was by the plug wire length-the Delphi uses a 10.5" wire and the other one was like 9.2" I had the Delphi style. FYI I have never had any ignition misfires or any other probs but I am only around 8 psi.

 

The LS1 Stock Eliminator car at Thunder had some huge coils that he used. I don't know what kind they were or how he had them wired in though.

i think harlan has them also, i know he used them for the spring shoot out.
Ronnie Duke (8 second CR5 vert) had them on for a while, then went to a distriubter.

 

I wish I could tell you which one was better and why, but I don't know.

So here is my story, and i'm sticking to it!
We ran a 383 with a f1r blower on the engine dyno. It had stock ls1 coils msd wires and autolite 3933 plugs. Around 5500 rpm with 20 pounds of boost and about 800 hp it started to have a audible light missfire. We changed to new plugs, wires, e-dist, and fast box but the miss would not go away. It seemed when we put the new plugs in (.025 gap) the first pull would be the best, then the missfire would get worse with every pull. We then put a truck coil on the engine, the triangle looking one that requires a longer wire. The missfire was gone and never returned. We ran 9.55 @144 with that motor in Ronnie Duke's convertible with no missfire's. I'm not sure whats different, so take this story for what its worth.

I believe Harlan indicated that the truck coils have 5kV more secondary voltage as well as reduced min. time between events.

There were/are 2 styles of truck coils. The round ones are Delphi, the square ones are Melco. The Melco's have a hotter spark. Not sure why, but that's the way they made them

From what I can figure, Mitsubishi Electric (Melco) prolly can make them cheaper. There are LOTS of trucks out there, and a couple bucks a vehicle in the land of the Big 3 is a huge deal.

 

So Matt, you are saying that the Melco's are better than the Delphi's? Would you have a part number for those coils? Thanx

btw, the square ones came off a 2001 6.0, i had a 99 5.3 that had the square coils also, and round ones are off of a 03 4.8.

 

Do the coil pack harness simply plug with my existing harness or is there any modification needed?

 

both sets i have are from trucks and they are interchangeable, you need the longer wires with the square coils though. here is another pic.

 

Anyone know where I can find these these with harness,brackets and coils?
