a standard rear mount kit is a good place to start for future modifications or if you are looking for just a little more punch over stock, but i have found that most people don't like rear-mounts because they bolted the kit up as advertised expecting monster horsepower numbers and track times then are sadly disappointed or have never actually owned the system in the first place. i think the system works great but stock exhaust manifolds w/heat wrap, tuning tuning tuning, fuel system up-grade, turbo cam and a few other goodies such as some listed in the links below are needed to make a rear-mount work to it's full potential. lots of people complain about the air taking to long to get from the turbo to the motor, to me once the car is running the system is pressurized. some people fear sucking up water into the turbo. i've driven several times in torrential rain and have had no issues with sucking up water. looking at the picture below of how high the filter is located, if an Fbody is driving in deep enough water to be sucked into the turbo, ya probably shouldn't be driving anyway. the oil lines aren't for the faint of heart and is one of the few fears i have. changing spark plugs is hard enough as it is, with a rear-mount there is no extra stuff under the hood or the need for custom front mount turbo piping. it sounds awesome, sts has it's own list of pros and cons listed on their website. i'm running a custom intercooled t67 with a built 385cu.in. LT1 on 91oct. stock intake manifold pushing just over 500/570 rear-wheel on a one time mail order tune ( dyno tuning coming soon and more power) with no noticeable lag and capable of over 650rearwheel . mine hangs low, but the pipes of the new kits tuck the turbo up and away from the ground much more.. a buddy of mine ran the same T67/.81 intercooled LEP/sts kit on his stock 2002 SS and made over 530rear wheel in 100* Vegas. with a forged motor and 100oct. fuel it broke 680rear wheel. i think rear-mounts are more for daily drivers, emissions friendly and weekend worriers, front mounts more for weekend worriers and racers. to each is their own. all depends on what your over all goals are and how much you want to spend.
the LEP/STS kit my buddy and i are currently running:

with as high as the filter is, i'd be more worried about the opti getting wet then the turbo:

As for the post: Be honest with what your willing to spend. No b.s. or cutting corners. Just cut and dried honesty. I will tell you first hand that it is expensive. I could have saved myself a lot of money if I would have decided what I wanted to do in the first place instead of changing my mind all the time. My damn build mimics the way a freakin drunk walks. It has been all over the place. I'm sick of spending money and I'm not quite done yet. Sad thing is I haven't even started breaking crap yet! Check the sticky's on top of the FI forum. That is a good place to start. Once you decide what you want to do make a well thought out plan on the chain of events and stick to it. And for God's sake don't buy it if you don't have the money in hand! Good luck.
