The 4L80 is a TH400 with overdrive. Many of the guts are interchangeable. That said, you can buy a Th400 w/ rmvb and tbrake + a GearVendors overdrive for the cost of a 4L80.

If you haven't alraedy done so, call Greg @ FTI and get a price on a transmission and converter package. These guys are a pleasure to work with and are sponsors on here. I have used his converter (same one) for the last 2.5 yrs and had it restalled a few times for all my different setups that I have run. They restall the converter in one day. No screwing around. I 60' in the low 1.3's consistantly.
i though th400 is a 3 speed with no overdrive

4l80e 4 speed with overdrive

please correct me if i am wrong

Ok, an FLT level 5 4L80 is $3150 with an $850 core charge. That's just shy of 4 times more than the $1150 for the TH400.

You are correct on the pricing. Mine cost $4k for the trans, $1000 for the converter and around $1500 for the TCI computer. So yeah its about $6500 complete for the 4l80 Trans

thats more than I want to put into the car I think. Im on the fence on getting rid of the car and getting a vette. maybe if I could sell my setup for some decent money I would consider it. I just spent around 3000 on my current trans. and converter

A bone stock 4l80e will take a lot of abuse. Race weight of my truck is 4600 lbs. When I ran the time in sig the 80e did not even have a shift kit. I work out of the truck daily and put 30-35 k per year on it. The 80e had 28k on it when I swapped it in the truck. It had roughly 100 passes and 150k street miles on it, when the 2nd gear clutches went out. I had it rebuilt to stock specs except for a shift kit and vacuum mod. Unless you are in the 900 and up rwhp range a stock 80e will last for a long time. I got mine out of a junk yard for 850.00.

I gave $400 for my '01 core. Converters can be had in the $500 range (dont expect any bells and whistles though). Dont forget you can sell your built 4L60 (assuming its not broken) to help recoup the cost.

You can find a 4l80e fro cheaper than what you paid and he doesn't need the TCI computer to control it. He can come out way cheaper.

If you wanted to, there is a member on here with the screenname JUNK, he is local to me and he has a transmission shop. He has a z06 that he converted to an auto with a 4l65e that he built and he runs bottom 9's on. Contact him and he will give you all the info you need on making it last.

With the 4l80e, can overdrive be used when roll racing? I still can't decide on whether to go auto or 6spd for my turbo build and the majority of the racing around here is highway (too many ricers).

That would be true on the computer since it already has a 4l65 in it. SO take off $1500 and you are down to around $4500-5k depending on the converter.

I was a T56 so I needed a little bit more than most conversions. I have about $2200 in my setup. I traded my T56 for a rebuild. The most expensive part of my build was my converter at just over $500. I have about $400 in the transmission cooler/fan setup. There are some good budget 4L80 builders out there also.

You can race in OD. Depending on your year of transmission I would limit OD racing to under 900hp for the 99+ and about 1300hp for the pre-99 transmissions (assuming a spot-on build).

slow67, what did it cost you to get your cores and have them rebuilt? did you have the converter rebuilt and restalled?

I've got about $6300 in a fully built Rossler 4L80e with a brake, Yank SC3000, speartech wiring harness, Lokar dipstick and BMR crossmember. I reprogrammed the stock ECM.

Well another saving would be the price of a trans. I don't know where you got your trans from, but the top of the line trans from FLT is 3150 and Performabilt's is 3295 so thats another ~800 savings right there. Now the converter, I can see spending good money the converter though. That is one place you really don't want to skimp out on.

80e's are crazy expensive. I've weighed the options of 80e versus th400. You can't beat a RMVB TH400 for the money. Just don't highway drive it a lot. Get another car!

F that! My TH400 set up will be Roll Raced like crazy. It'll also have 2.73's in the back

My $700 TH400 was guaranteed by the builder to not break with less than 1k rwhp. He also built my friends Th400 and stands behind his work When his 4L60 broke, the builder paid for the tow truck and re-build

FWIW; TH400-$700... PTC 3200-$725

Yeah. I have 3.42's in my stock 10 bolt. So the highway driving should be kept to a minimum.

i ran a $500 stock 4l80e for more than 20k miles behind a 650hp LQ4/S475 combo before it let go, then i bought another one. i figure at this rate, Ill go 160k miles before I would break even on a $4000 transmission...Pass
