We have block and crankshaft cores here
I think alot of shops expected cores to be certain price, took orders, then tried to hunt down non existent cores.

I think it was more a result of mis management and not charging enough money. We've seen it time and time again.. someone tries to sell an engine cheaper than they should and it bites their ***.
You get what you pay for in the performance world. A person who is worth anything does not give away free labor and quality engines are not dirt cheap. Just the way it is.

We do machine work on TJ Zizzo's top fuel engines.
They're local to us, those engines are different animal. For a weekend they will take 6-8 blocks, try to use a new block for every hit. Top fuel block is $7500 IIRC so they bring them over to us line hone the used blocks, new saddles, new sleeves, or weld up the block if a rod went through it. The sleeves can't be repaired, new sleeves come from AJPE honed. They're gear drive so you have to be carefull the block isn't line honed too far. They pretty much run those things till the crank can't spin anymore.
We also have an '82 VW rabbit diesel engine in shop for overhaul, we see both extremes.
