Default Muffler Before Turbo----Rearmount??

Ok, i can stand the way a rearmount sounds until they get on it and turbo starts spooling up. (well, mine is not done, but there is a couple rearmounts around that ive been in)

I do have a set of spintechs that i was absolutley in love with before i went to rearmount. Now, they are NOT straight through, but very damn near straight through. Im strongly considering adding them in my pipes before the turbo to quiet it down a little and give it some tone.

any thoughts?? I know ill likley sacrifice a little power, but since the spintechs are supposed to flow so well, i wonder how much ill give up??

any thoughts??

thanks-kyle

EDIT- Interestingly enough, they are supposed to increase exhaust velocity (or at the least, minimize) it?? http://www.spintechmufflers.com/inde...iewDoc&docId=5 maybe im reading it wrong. mods, if this link is inappropriate, im sorry.

Do you still have the cats on it? I would think they have more restriction then the loudmounth. Anything you put in front of it will probably increese your lag time some.

If the sound of the turbo whine is what bothers you, I do not think putting a muffler before the turbo will help with that. The sound is being generated in the turbo. If thats what you are wanting to get rid of, you would have to put the muffler after the turbo.

Expect more lag time and maybe a little loss of power on the big end either way you do it.

Good luck

The turbo does a damn good job REPLACING the muffler. My front mount has about 1 foot of DP on it and its quieter than it was stock with a flowmaster.

If you are dead set on a muffler. Borla > Spintech when it comes to flow AND decibel level.

ok, i like the turbo sound. and the turbo does not do a good job of replacing the muffler, IMO. I cannot put a muffler after the turbo, its a gto. The turbo literally sits where the exhaust opening in the bumper is. My only choice is before.

i dont mind the turbo sound when it gets going, infact, i love the sound of the turbo, i cannot stand the sound of the open exhaust when the turbo is making noise. idle sounds like crap, low throttle sounds like crap. I physically cannot put one after.

so with that said, i have a set of spintechs. why is borla better then? im asking, not arguing, lol.

i thought i noticed that zl1killa had some before?

Theres a thread comparing mufflers and I want to say the Borla XR1 was both the quietest and best performing.

What RPM is your idle set to and what kind of AFR are you getting? I love the sound of my turbo in and out of boost lol.

its idles around 600 or 700 in gear right now.

and did that thread compare it to the spintechs?? The reason i ask is because spintech claims that there design scavanges and creates more heat some how. which is suppose to increase velocity i suppose.

Haha no **** man! I have my exhaust dumped in the engine compartment right now and I still like it. Althought its wearing on me lol

Borla and many others make small race mufflers that are about 3" long. All of them flow extremely well so stick to a decent brand and youll be ok.

found that thread, looks like the hooker max flows have no restriction is comparison to a 2.5" pipe. i wonder if they would be worth it?

i may consider that. doesnt help when windows are down, lol

This was in my truck but I ran a big 3 inch magnaflow muffler in front of the turbo and it sounded great. With no cats or muffler it sounded awefull but with the muffler before the turbo it sounded great and it didn't affect spool up or power that much. There are a few videos of my truck in my sig if you want to here it at the track.

I would not run a muffler before the turbo. How far back is the turbo? Maybe resinated tips. Or two 3" bullets before the tips. Need as much flow as possible to the turbo for max results.

I ran a good straight through Magnaflow before my turbo for 2 years and didn't affect hp or spool time. It sounded great and powered my heavy 4X4 into the 11's with moderate boost. Just my opinion though.

The turbo does a hell of a job at shutting up an exhaust, I wouldn't run a muffler before it. If you absolutely had to, I would find a straight through muffler like a bullet or race muffler.
