As few of you know, i had a 408 built not a month ago for my turbo setup. It ran for a week till i broke trans, then ran from wednesday to saturday when i raced the mustang i posted a video of. Well, after that run i heard my motor knocking so i went home. Pulled oil filter off and cut it open to find aluminum, or babbet material. Well long story short we finally pulled motor out yesterday and tore it down today to find this on number 2 and number 7 piston.

Before all the questions get asked.....I was on 14psi, afr was around 10.8-11.0, we have 16* of timing, have flowmatched 78lb fic injectors, vic jr intake, aeromotive a1000 pump with fuel cell and -8 feed line, 160 stat, coolant crossovers on front and rear.

Yes sir. The bearings looked brand new. This motor only ran for a total of nine days. We went with the clevite race bearings.

Looks like a combo of heat and right bore. What did they bore your motor too and what where the rings gapped too? 2 and 7 are the notorious holes that have problems with heat.

Im not sure on bore but i believe rings were .26 top and .24 bottom. I show clearance on cylinder to be .065"

Meant too say tight bore, because of the little time it ran that would be my best guess.

yup, looks like too little piston to wall clearance. once they got some real heat in em they were toast. can you measure the good cyls?

He made me a build sheet showing that they were clearanced to .065" and said they still have that. He said that should be enough clearance. The motor is at machine shop, thats where we tore it down. I just feel like he is trying to put the blame on me and i dont have the money to buy pistons right now.

I'd make sure you know what your getting, just first off. 2nd alot of shops will try and 2 step around something like that, sayin they built it right, and it's your fault. From the pics I'd agree it looks like the bore was alittle too tight. Hope it all works out for you. Btw did they use a deck plate when boring the motor?

all i can say is weisco specs a P2W of .004 on "most small blocks", so does diamond, and they suggest adding another thousandth if its a nitrous or boosted engine.

.065 is a number that doesnt even compute. either he forgot a zero... or he didnt check it at all. i'd measure it myself if i were you.

You are correct. I forgot to add the zero. Lol. It was .0065 i spoke with wiseco earlier. He thought it couldve been too much and not using a torque plate caused it.
