How much HP you looking to make? A walbro will get you to 500rwhp.

Sounds like a neat build. I'd skip the 317's if they are going to drop your compression that much, plus they are designed for a 4.000 bore engine and I think your 4.8 is 3.79 bore or something like that.

I'm looking to get as much hp as I can without spending too much and without blowing up the engine. Prolly around 600-700 hp. I'm not running the 317s. I just replaced the rod bolts to arp last night. next is to install the cam and valve springs

got the engine and trans in with fabricated motor mounts and tranny cross member. engine has an ls9 cam, arp rod bolts, and ls6 valve springs. sticking with truck intake. masterpower t76. tial 44mm wg, hks bov, apexi electronic boost controller. intercooler mounted, tranny cooler mounted, had to get a non-AC s10 heater box because i flipped the manifolds upside down and forward and the AC box didn't fit. I'm working on wiring and LS1 front brake conversion right now. got a good deal on 4th gen charcoal gray leather front and back seats for 200 bucks. got a 4th gen console also. thinking about doing a 4th gen dash swap but i kinda like the 3rd gen one. i need to find a solution to my speedo being mechanical. also, the windsheild washer motor touches the valve cover.. looking for a rear end. about to tear out all my red interior and replace it with black so i have a wider range of colors i can paint the car. looking to get some iroc sway bars, corvette wheels, iroc spoiler, and a cowl hood.

ill probably be making a build thread when i'm finished or close to it.

Did you have the rods resized after the ARPs?

Sounds like a neat build. I would ditch the LS6 valve springs in favor of something a little beefier though. They will pay for themselves when you don't have to go to the dyno twice because your LS6 springs were floating the valves.

they should be fine.. the ls9 cam only has max lift of .562 and the ls6 springs are rated at .570 or something. ive been told they will do fine and i'm not looking to waste a lot of money on something i dont need.

If you're worried about spending another $300, you're in the wrong game here. Good springs are not a "waste of money" when it comes to FI.

Those springs would be cutting it close on an NA motor with that cam. Throw boost at it and it's a whole new ball game. Suit yourself, but you can change them now or change them later.

So what about all those guys who have been running FI on their stock engines with no problems with valve float?

I guess what I'm saying is that the ls9 engine is built to last thousands of miles without any major problems. The ls9 valve springs have the same--maybe less seat pressure as the ls6 valve springs. I'm on a budget and not looking to throw down hundreds of dollars on something I potentially don't need. From what I've read and been told, with this innocent of a cam and mild boost settings, the ls6 valve springs should do fine.

Have you been taking any pics so far? If so, I'd love to see them as I'm starting a very similar build in my s10.

Don't skimp on a fuel system....walbro 255's are rated for 500 HP at the flywheel N/A, not boosted. Plus, pumps flow less at higher PSI, and LSx motors run around 58 PSI of pressure while the pumps are flow tested at 43.5 PSI. I have dual in tank walbros, and all -8 feed line and -6 return. I understand you are trying to do a budget build, but honestly, "budget" and "FI" do not go well in the same sentence. With these little 4.8's and 5.3's with some boost making 600 HP, you need to build it correctly, or it will be a short lived engine.

As far as the cam and valve springs, I have LS6 springs and a stock LS6 cam. I don't plan on turning over 6K RPM's so valve float is a non issue for me. I'd say you'll be fine as long as you don't spin the engine really high.

Thanks for the input, NightmareTA. I already bought a walbro 255 external and had a few people tell me I should be good for around 500 RWHP with that and my in-tank pump running, but I'm a little skeptical about that. I just don't want to mess with taking out the fuel pump bc then I may run the risk of it not sealing right, etc. Can I run dual external pumps??

As for the "budget" and "FI" comment... I have purchased pretty much everything from the turbo/WG/BOV to gauges to fuel. along with the engine/ tranny AND the car and probably spent less than $4k total. I've gotten great deals and fabricated most of the stuff many people would pay hundreds of dollars for.. so it can be done. I'll make a thread when I'm finished about how I lucked out on a bunch of parts with great deals..

MTChevy1, and whoever else wants to see pics so far, here's a link to my photobucket which has a few pics of my progress: http://s1116.photobucket.com/albums/k566/jsampson93/

Run two pumps the same in parallel. Either Walbro's or otherwise. Their little in-tank units are cheap and cheerful. They also do external versions which are also cheap.

Cant comment on 500rwhp per pump though. Here in the UK we'd only rate them for 500hp flywheel at best.
Either way they are great little pumps.
