Default budget 4.8 turbo build questions (317s? turbo ?s etc)

Ok, I'm doing a budget 4.8 turbo build. I got lucky and picked up a complete 4.8 from a U-Pull-It yard for 170 bucks! I bought various parts from members on here including: a custom ground zo6 cam (specs: 204/218 duration @.050 555/551 lift on a 116LSA). HD timing chain kit, ls6 ported oil pump, and dual valve springs. So far thats what I have bought. *edit* I will be using pump gas. Whats a good fuel option? One big pump or duals?

First question: Are the 317 heads worth it? How much of a gain will i get with these over the stock 4.8 heads? This is going to be a street car and a DD for the most part. Reason I'm asking is because if I upgrade the heads, that'll be ~$140 for heads, ~$90 for head gasket and bots (found some Felpro gaskets on advanced for $24 each. and an Edelbrock Head Bolt Kit for $67. are these adequate?) so thats about $230(prolly will be more with misc parts) for just the heads. Is that worth the advantages the 317s have over my 4.8 heads? or should i use that money to buy a better turbo/parts?

Second question: Just looking for opinions on what would be a good sized turbo for my 4.8. Again, this is a budget build so I don't plan on spending more than 500 on a turbo. I am considering ebay turbos and holset turbos, etc. Let me know what you think.

Third Question: whats a good sized wastegate? I'm looking at a Tial 38mm wastegate for $215 shipped. is this a good way to go? I know I shouldn't skimp out on a wastegate because if it fails my engine is toast.

Fourth Question: Keeping the stock truck intake: I've read up on people using the truck intake with ls1 fuel rails so that they can upgrade to bigger injectors. should I go this route or switch to ls1/ls2/ls6 intake?

Fifth question: Anything else I must upgrade on my engine? Rod bolts I'm assuming?

sixth question: whats a good site/place to buy turbo piping?

Anything else you guys can help me out on, lemme know.

Thanks

how much boost do you want to run?
317 with drop your comp down to approximately 8.25:1 comp which is unnecessary unless your looking to run more then 15psi, also forget about felpro gaskets and cheap headbolts, if you do the head swap its good measure to do ls9 gaskets and arp headstuds

furthermore, i honselty can not tell you what the perfect size turbo is, but i will be running a holset hx55 on my 4.8, it seemed like a pretty good size for my needs and i guess i see how it works here soon,
and for you intake if you can fit the truck manifold keep it, it will flow then ls1/ls2 intakes and is not far behind the ls6 if not as good

also what year is your motor?

Definately get rod bolts, I wouldn't change the heads, if you need more power its just a boost controller away.....

Look for a used MasterPower T70, can probably get one for around 300-400 bucks.

Intake depends on what it's going in, if it's a car you will most likely need a ls1 or ls2/6 intake mani.

I don't know anyone that actually sells turbo pipes, unless your talking getting bends and straights and making your own.....

Not more than 15.. It's just a budget build to see how much horsepower I can push out of my 4.8. So just trying to get the best performance for the money.

It's a 99 out of a silverado. It's going in an 89 camaro but I will be using a cowl hood so it'll fit. Do you know if the fuel rails are nessecary for the bigger injectors to fit?

Thanks for your input on everything! I'll look into that turbo

Ok I'll look for a set of arp rod bolts

Alright I'll look into that turbo, thanks!

Yeah that's what i meant. Just somewhere that I can buy quality bends and such.

Not worth it for what your wanting. I would use the money on Rod Bolts.

Second question: Just looking for opinions on what would be a good sized turbo for my 4.8. Again, this is a budget build so I don't plan on spending more than 500 on a turbo. I am considering ebay turbos and holset turbos, etc. Let me know what you think.

Master Power T70 is a nice turbo, they can be had for cheap but a new one isn;t that expensive. http://www.vsracing.net/catalog/prod...roducts_id=812

For the price of a Tial you can get a bigger 40mm JGS for the same price.

Fourth Question: Keeping the stock truck intake: I've read up on people using the truck intake with ls1 fuel rails so that they can upgrade to bigger injectors. should I go this route or switch to ls1/ls2/ls6 intake?

Me personally I would do an LS1/6 Manifold, but as far as the actual question I don't know.

Fifth question: Anything else I must upgrade on my engine? Rod bolts I'm assuming?

Rod bolts = yes.

sixth question: whats a good site/place to buy turbo piping?

http://www.mandrel-bends.com/catalog/ = The best prices I have seen.

Anything else you guys can help me out on, lemme know.

Thanks
Also, I didn't see any fuel related things? Fuel is a very important piece of the puzzle, what do you plan on for this?

TheLS1lover: thanks you for your input! It helps out a lot. As for fuel, I plan on running bigger injectors obviously and I've read up on dual fuel pumps but can I achieve what I need with one bigger walbro pump? I might also run a small meth kit when I get it together just to be safe

also just so you know the masterpower t70 is only good for about 500-550 hp anything more than that you pushing the reliability of the turbo
they make a t76 as well which will make 700+ easily but it is over your price range (800$)

SSAC is a eBay Wastegate, nothing more. Therefore they are NOT good.

Ok I'll look into those. Yeah I was a little skeptical on those wastegates because they are so cheap. I did however read about people running them for two years with no issues. That's why I asked.

I can get an intercooler on eBay for fairly cheap so thts not really an issue.. I'll prolly want to spend at most 250 on waste gate.. Is a 38mm a good size?

honestly its better to go larger if possible, general rule of thumb if your running a relatively small turbo for you combo then larger wg are needed to fight boost creep
but i found its much cheaper to get a large one first. Then it is to get a small one have boost creep and have to add another or a larger one

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do for fueling? One big in tank pump? Dual intake pumps? Or out of tank pump?
