Oil in a turbo question

Default Oil in a turbo question

I am taking my clutch out and had to take the exhaust off the passenger side to get the transmission out. In doing that the aps turbo was unbolted and left to just hang down over night. I don't know much about turbos so my question is, is it a bad thing if oil runs out of the turbo? There was a small puddle on the ground this morning. I am thinking this is probably normal but just need to make sure. Thanks

No, but I make it a practice to pre-oil the turbo before starting.

which APS kit is it

They are APS twins. I will have to find out what size, and it is coming through the blades while it is hanging down. While the car was running there was no issue that I know of. It didn't smoke and built the boost that it was set for which was 10psi. The car made 670 at 10 psi just the other day. I only pulled it down to balance the clutch.

Oh, I would definately look into that. It shouldn't be leaking out past the blades.

If oil is coming out of anything BUT the inlet/outlet of the CHRA you probably have a problem

Edit: are you running an oil restrictor pill on the inlet side?

is it the base kit? and if it is your turbos are junk. my turbos did the same thing. you need to get new CHRAs or PM louis@ GSS he is a vender on here. i got my turbos from him.

So what you are telling me is, no oil should be able to pass through from the inlet side through the blades? The way it was hanging it was almost streight down if that matters?

I just pulled my turbo off my car the other day and noticed a puddle of oil in the cold side and just a little in the piping. some people say a little oil is o.k ? But I dont know...

im taking it as you bought the car all ready setup like this do to the lack of info on the car.
if you have the base APS kit like i did. than 100% those turbos are on the way out or done already. it doesnt take long. anything over 8psi will kill them. i know, i rebuilt two of them before i got the LG upgrades.
next thing to do is check of end play in the turbo shafts. how much play do they have?
can you post some pics

And FILL OUT YOUR SIG!!! anything is better than nothing. we need info to help you

You hit the nail on the head. I went back through invoices that I got with the car and it looks like the kit was sold back in 08 from a company called TCR Inc all it says is that the kit is an APSGTO-TTS/04. I did not fill out the sig. because I have more than one car. This one is set up for 10 psi on a stock bottom end. It was ran one time on the dyno at 13psi but not ran that way since. Let me know what you need for info and I will be glad to share it with you. Thanks for trying to help!

The car has only 13,000 miles on it but most of that was without the turbos.

ok so its in a GTO right?
if so i think they have oil return pumps for the turbo. how much oil was coming out of the turbo?
and look to see where the return lines for the turbos run to and if you find a pump make sure it is turning on

The clutch and exhaust is out of the car now. I there a test that I need to run before I put everything back together?
