Default SRP pistons for boost?

Hey guys, I wanted to make kind of a spinoff thread of ZGOBYBYs thread so I don't clutter hers up.

I have a set of SRP -31cc pistons in my car now, transmission is off getting faceplated/viper spec'd by RPM. Running 8.5:1cr, LE Trick Flow heads, LE custom cam (.570 224dur 114lsa), GT88 turbo, 17ish psi w/ 93oct and meth. Engine is on a stand right now, block looks damn near new so I'd just need to hone it and toss some JE's in. I'm thinking my head gasket would pop before a piston (FelPro 1074).

Would it be worth the $1200 to buy JEs, rings, and have my crank rebalanced or should I just keep with the SRPs?

Because the SRPs have a higher silicon content than JEs, makes em weaker. I see a few N2O guys hate em, and a few boost guys run 22-24 psi on em. They look great, don't want to regret not changing them later.

I don't think you are putting enough boost on it to be worried. If you were hitting it with 25psi then I would say change them and get a set with a good compression height.

Look at it this way, there are guys running the boost you are on stock ls1 pistons and rings.

Stay away from 4032 alloy pistons... You want forged 2618 alloy pistons.

I went with the JE's just because I wanted a little bit of a safety net if something goes a bit wrong for a moment. I'm sure with a good tune and reliable setup, the SRPs will hold up just fine at your boost level. If you get a bad tank of gas or the tune isn't spot on in a particular area, the SRPs may not take a beating like the JEs.

Just my $.02 on my choice.

Jontall- They are 4032s :-(

Blackbird- A safety net is a good thing, your bottom end and mine are almost identical. What rings are you using in it?

I know they're 4032 alloy, that's why I'm telling you to stay away from them. Get a set of Wiseco or Diamond pistons.

I agree the 2618 is a stronger material and will tollerate more abuse but there is nothing wrong with a 4032 piston if things are set up right. Also all pistons are not created equal. A srp piston desinged for boost with a .250-.300" thick deck, and top ring down .300" is going to take alot more boost than a light weight flat top srp designed for NA.

^Lol. I'm just trying to find a few reasons to shove me over the edge.

96TransAMBoosted- Sure, this'll MAKE me get JEs lol. They have 822.6 easy miles on em, hardly any wear. I can get some pics for ya sometime if you want. PM me if you wanna.

I hear not to go gapless. Any reason you used them? I hear they give a great 2-3% leakdown after some hard miles.
