At what horsepower is it time to switch out the stock water pump?

I've been on the stocker for 7 years now at around 800 hp with no issue.

Evans offers a nice stock style water pump that has an improved impeller design.... I would contact them.

Very pricey though. IMO not worth the $ unless you are doing sustained high RPM racing ie roadrace or mile racing. For street and drag the stocker works just fine. I'm running a stocker in my soon to be 1500rwhp street car. Will upgrade to the evans before the next mile race.

im running the edelbrock water pump. it works great and isnt too pricey. It has an improved impeller and tighter tolerances between the impeller and body to provide additional flow, and an extra bearing in the shaft. the nice thing is that the impeller can be removed as a separate pice from the pump body if you ever need to change it for any reason.

Just because I can feel the question out there without anyone asking it, the stocker outflows the electric pumps. The main benefit to running an electric pump is that you can run it in the pits with the fans on and the car off and cool down much faster between rounds.

Yes sir, the stocker definately flows more, I had a meziere on the car and had issues with it getting hot on highway cruises. Put the stocker back on and had no more problems.

Not doubting you guys, but I'd like to see the numbers (proof) to this?

Just call Meziere. It's not a secret. They just don't advertise it.

I'd never heard that, that's why I ask. So the stock water pump flows more than 55GPM?

At speed the stocker outflows the electric. At idle it does not. I run a stocker in mine. just make sure you block off the bypass.

You learn something new everyday I run a SBC thermostat in my billet AN thermostat housing, so there's no bypass. How much does the stocker flow at cruise rpm and 6k or 7k rpm?

I have heard that the electric pumps flow equivalent of what the stock one does at 4000RPM. So anything over 4k you would flow more with the stocker. Not sure how true this is, but thats what I heard...

Theres a decent thread about this in the advanced section. Take your thermostat out and look at the TWO plates. One is the thermostat the other regulated the bypass circuit. I gut the thermostat and scre an aluminum block off plate so nothing get through the bypass.
