Default Not sure which route to take on the engine?

Hey Guys I was hoping to get a little advice from you guys. My ultimate plan is a fully built engine to be done on the side. But for now I want to know what I can do with my LS1. I've got an SMC kit on the way and plan up upping the boost to 12 psi at the stock 6200 rev limit. Now I don't want to pour too much money into this engine as I'm going to pull it eventually for a completely different setup. But I was thinking about getting in on the L-19 head stud GP and getting a thicker head gasket to lower my compression. Maybe around 9.5:1. How much are MLS or Cometic head gaskets? I've heard conflicting reports on whether this is an effective method of lower compression. I doubt i will ever touch the bottom end of this engine. However later in the season I might do a cam, upgrade the valvetrain, and get rid of my LS1 intake for something better. Saving for a house and a new engine I don't want to invest in forged bottom end or heads. Too much wasted money.

I don't know a lot about working the internals for a boosted engine. Would really appreciate any advice you guys might have.

Thanks,
Mike

Enough to stay ahead of 99% of the 03 cobras and 03 Vipers out there. So I'm guessing ~600 rwhp. I'm probably currently in the 460-500 range. I give a wide range as I have never acheived 8 lbs. yet and only see 4-6 usually. I'm not looking for the biggest numbers possible, but I want impressive numbers without significantly sacrificing engine life. Hitting 600 will be nice, but if I can keep her running strong for 2 years then I will consider it a huge success.

At your power level , i dont think you will need the l-19 studs. once you go past the 15 psi or 400 hit you will.

The gaskets you can reuse or sell, the studs you can use for your new engine.
id invest in some 6.0 heads, as they can be used on your new engine as well.

What's the cheapest way to get a set of 6.0L heads(keeping in mind I am not going to trade in my 5.7L heads)? What would my compression be then? If I could find a set for <$500(with no core exchange) then I'd probably do it. Just don't know if I can find them in my price range.

My list of suggestions:

1) LS6 intake $400
2) Upgraded valvesprings - 918's, 6.0 heads, ~70/71 cc's so a small drop in compression + GM MLS head gaskets and L19's if you want to spend $1000

Hey thanks for the advice smokin. I gave him a call and he definitely had a good price for me. Thanks for the heads up. My LS1 can breath a little easier and thanks you too

Now if new heads are on the way, what else should I be thinking about getting? 918 springs? hardend pushrods? head studs or head bolts? gaskets? cam? Anything else I'm not thinking of?

I'm trying to think about the best way to pick up an LS6 intake. With the new LSX I figured some people would be upgrading and selling their LS6 at a cheaper price. Or possibly I could find a wrecked 01/02 and get theirs REALLY cheap. Are most of you all just buying your's from vendors or are finding cleaver ways to save a buck? If so, let me know I'm all about the budget build up on THIS engine. The new one is gonna put a hurtin on the wallet!

Mike

You still haven't fixed the head gasket? You blew that along time ago? It might have been rings? Track times? Wasting bandwidth..............get that thing fixed, by the way FI is not cheap. Angelo

I run Cometic head gaskets that are .030 thicker then stock. The heads I put on were decked .030" so I compensated with the head gaskets. I have been using them for abut 1.5 years. A .030" thicker head gasket should drop compression about half a point.

Heads just came in this afternoon and they look great. Shawn was really easy to deal with and got his heads out and to me exactly when he said he would! I highly recommend.
