Talking 1987 Trans AM Twin Turbo Forged 6.0 Build

Figured I'd make a thread for the build I'm currently doing. I have a 1987 Trans AM that came with a sad little LG4 (305) and a 700R4. About 2 years ago I swapped a stock LT1 into it for some more fun, I wasn't expecting it to be quick, but at least better. Well, needless to say... I caught the bug. After 1 week I was bored of the LT1... onwards to the LSX family and boost .

Below is a list of parts for my build. Parts that I already have will be marked as purchased. If you see anything wrong with my list/parts selected, PLEASE let me know I've purchased all of my parts based on the deals I could get on them, so the order I've purchased things is completely random. My goal is to make 800-900rwhp @ 17-20psi.

Engine:
Stock 2001+ LQ4 block - Still need one from around the IL/IA area!
Lightly ported 317 heads - Purchased
PAC 1218 springs - Purchased
LS6 Intake - Purchased
Probe 4" bore 3.622" stroke 2618 forged -16cc pistons - Purchased
Eagle Forged H-Beam 3.622" stroke 6.125" rod length - Purchased
Stock LQ4 Crank? - I'd like input here, I've seen many threads of them hitting 900+ with no issues, and have yet to see a thread where ones actually let loose.
Melling Ported HV Oil Pump - Purchased
Custom Grind 231/231 .574/.574 113 - Purchased
New Manley Exhaust Valves - Purchased
Harland Sharp 1.7 Rockers - Purchased
ARP Rod Bolts - Purchased
ARP Head Studs - Still need to buy, I have some brand new stock head bolts for sale
Timing Chain/Gear - Buying new from Summit
GM MLS Headgaskets - Purchased

Fuel System:
Aeromotive A1000 Pump - Purchased
92# Injectors @ 58psi - Purchased
Braided Fuel Lines - Still need
Aeromotive FPR - Purchased
Fuel Rails - Still need
Surge Tank? - Not sure yet, would be a nice fail safe though. Thoughts?

Turbos
Twin GT3582R's - Purchased
Twin Tial 36mm Wastegates - Purchased
Water to Air Intercooler - Still need
Piping/Flanges - Still need
Electronic Boost Controller - Still need
Synapse BOV - Purchased
Oil lines, etc - Still need

Chassis/Drivetrain
LS1 T56 Rebuilt - Purchased
Drive shaft - Still need
Monster Level 5/6 Clutch - Still need
Sub-Frame connectors - Still need
LS1 Motor mounts for thirdgens - Still need, if you have a set let me know!
9 bolt or 12 bolt - Haven't decided yet on the rear-end >< thoughts?

I didn't add every tiny part because the thread would be MASSIVE, but these are the core components

Let me know if you think I should do something differently. Thanks everyone!

Edit: Here's some pictures of the car when I first got it.

The LT1 I built and put in and then ripped out one week later:

and finally, some new goodies:

more pics to come soon...

haha, I remember seeing that video on streetfire, poor thirdgen Just out of curiosity, how much would you guys at speedinc charge to tune this setup when it's all done? I'll most likely be bringing it to you since you're the most reputable local company.

You should be looking at a better cam, you would be leaving alot on the table running a LS6 one.

I was thinking along the same lines, the only thing that was really holding me back was lift. My PAC 1218 springs are good for .600 lift. I'm not a turbo cam expert myself, if you have a recommendation for a nice 'custom grind' turbo cam i'd love to hear!

Just spoke with Tony @ SpeedInc, Great guy! Looks like I'll be going with a custom grind 231/231 .574/.574 113 over the LS6 cam.

I currently have the opportunity to buy a brand new LS2 block at a decent price, what do you guys think? I've heard of the LS2 being pushed 900hp+, but I'm worried about deflection.

Hmm, sounds good so far. I love the idea of saving some weight to balance out the added weight of the turbos, piping, and etc. Hopefully he still wants to get rid of it

I baking soda blasted the heads to clean then up and hit the valves while I was at it. The intake valves cleaned up really nice and look like jewlry. Some of the exhaust valves got me a tad worried though. I'm not a head expert in any form or way, so correct me if I'm wrong, but they look like they got pretty hot. The exhaust valves have a red tint to them (like rust) and what appears to be some pitting. One (in the center on the first pic) appears to have a big pit at the base of the stem. The intake valves look fine and will be reused, but what do you guys think of the exhaust valves? Get new ones? Also do you think these heads need an angle job?

Sorry for the badish quality pics (camera phone)

Pic #1 - Valves

Pic #2 - Valves

Pic #3 - Heads

Thanks guys!

Yeah, I didn't hit them for long though. I'm sure they'd clean up better with walnut, but I was too lazy to empty out all the baking soda from when i did the heads (aluminum). I think I'm ganna just replace the exhaust valves to be safe.

Lets see a 3rd Gen ,lighter with same power train = win, just giving you sh*t, to the OP you have a kick azz list of parts. I am looking forward to seeing how this turns out. If you cant tell by my screen name, I am partial to the beloved 3rd gen, especially those of the boosted lsx variety.

Didnt see ARP head studs or a driveshaft in your list Also if you are in the market for a rear end theres the Midwest Chassis fabbed 9", those guys are known to have excellent products and customer service. I went with the Strange S60 but Id probably go with MWC if I did it all again. If you are absolutely stuck on using a manual, get a twin disk, especially if you are going to be driving in traffic. The on/off clutches get real old.
