Default Overheating f1a 408 2002 t/a

Ok, here is the rundown on my setup. I have a 8.5:1 iron blocked 408 motor that is fresh with ls3 heads and an f1a procharger setup. It has a th400 with a 3500 converter and 4.10 gears. The radiator is a griffin aluminum dual row that everyone uses and has two 12" pushers and 1 16" puller on it. The thermostat is new and is a 160. The fans are set to come on at 180 and off at 170. The car will idle and get up to around 200 sitting there with the fans on. If you drive the car around a little it will start climbing and continue till you shut it off. I drove it without the bumper and a clear path to the radiator. Could it be a bad waterpump? I know they leak, but didnt know they could come apart internally. Its not losing coolant and runs fine so I dont think its a head gasket because no oil in water or water in oil. Where should I start, there has to be something I am missing. Thanks for the help, Josh

sounds like an air pocket in the heads. Id try to bleed the air outta the crossover tubes on the heads close to the intake and see if any air comes out. Look through filler neck to see if water is comming through upper hose to verify pump working.

Just loosen the crossover tubes to bleed the air?

make sure the fans are pulling on the engine side and pushing on the bumper cover side.

That would be the first place I would look too, as it is very easy to wire the fans backwards. The fans can be blowing back against the radiator and with the air bouncing off the radiator, make it appear that the fans are in the correct puller mode. Bob

I just installed the fans and they are wired correctly. I powered them up before I installed them and made sure they blow the correct way. Any other ideas?

so do you still have the front air dam on the car? I've seen some that for whatever reason would do what your talking about without one.

I have installed 2 different 160 thermostats and it does the same thing. What about a water pump?

1. 3 fan motors create considerable dead areas on the core.
2. 1-16" fan flow will not keep up w/ 2 12" fans.
What does a review of the tune say? Timing, afr, etc, all GTG??

I am working on the tune currently. Its a fresh setup and getting all the bugs worked out. Is it possible that timing, afr are causing the high temps?

do you have the bumper back on with the air dam? also do you have your trans lines going into the radiator first then the trans cooler, if you have them going into the radiator before the trans cooler your putting the hottest fluid into the rad. I've swapped them before having the lines first going into the trans cooler then radiator, it helped on towing vehicles which have a lot of heat to be dealt with. Do you have a trans cooler?

Cooler is separate from radiator. Bumper is off but lower air dam is on. Here are some crappy cell phone pics.

Did you ever get this figured out?? Like was said earlier, make sure the fans and pushing/pulling how they are supposed to. Is the 16in puller the stock ATI fan? If so ditch it for the Spal and add the small 9in with it and you should be good to go. Been discussed many times on here

I am gonna do the pump this weekend. If that doesn't fix then gonna put a spal on it. Yes its the ati 16" fan right now, but also has 2 12" in front of condenser. Thanks for the advice. I will let ya know what happens. Josh
