Starting a new project, pretty simple little deal.

1988 mazda rx7 with a 4l80e and 8.8" Rear end.

Ive got two motors too choose from for the first fun in the sun part of the build.

4.8 or the 6.0. Using the TC78. This is V1.0 to get the car together and have some fun with it. WOrk the kinks out, etc.

My thoughts, the 4.8 would probably work better with the TC78???

The 4.8 will be able to make more power with the F1 wheel of the TC than the 6.0. Even with that A/R. Especially with the extra exhaust volume of E85.

But either engine would work well.

Did you guys notice TC78 is only $850 now on the turbonetics website, and they have all the housings up to 1.52 for sale there too. The 1.52 is $499 I think though, wtf mate. But $850 seems like a good deal.

So we are thinking the 4.8 would be better then. Thas what i was thinking. I will have room for a 3.5 or maybe even 4" downpipe, not sure if that changes the game any. lol

What kind of power are you trying to make? I say the 6.0, should make 700rwhp turned up and spool STUPID fast.

I guess i was just hoping someone would say "Man, between those two options, the 4.8 is obvious choice" lol.

If i go with the 6.0, the poor GTO is getting a 4.8 But, itll then give me a reason to pull the motor, and that means getting the stall out of their will be much much easier. Got few people that wanna buy it.

If you're going for max power, go with the 4.8. The TC will choke on the 6L before the 4.8L. Otherwise, it really won't matter which one you use haha

In that case I'd leave the 6.0 in the gto and just do the 4.8, no reason to blow up a good 6.0 lol. In a light rx7, mid 9's shouldn't be an issue with a 4.8.

agreed on the 4.8, wont choke out the turbine as easily and the small bore willl allow boost in the 20s without pushing water

I too agree on using the 4.8l, the turbine wheel is so darn small on those TC units.

LOL, Ill get some pics and start a build thread this weekend, going to pick up the 4.8 tomorrow morning.

As it sits, its just a white chassis with red doors and front fenders. lol Ill start a thread though

if what i hear about the 4.8 being able to rev to 7000+ without scattering itself like the 6.0, id go with the 4.8 all day.......

I dont want to hijack the the thread jax, but how much of a difference would switching the exhaust housing make?

A bigger exhaust housing helps, but you can only do so much with the 68mm turbine wheel.

Finding housings larger than 1.15 is hard for Turbonetics stuff. Supposedly Comp was going to be making bigger housings for them, but I don't know if that ever happened.

I dont see why someone like COMP doesnt make a bigger exhaust wheel for the TC78, so its more on par with the Precision units.

Id pay for a new wheel and turbine housing. a 75mm turbine wheel would be a very nice addition to the TC78. Turbonetics should get off their asses.

I went to turonetics site and you can get all the way up to a 1.52 a/r turbine for the f1-68 compressor that in the tc78 its 500$ which isnt cheap but would be a nice upgrade im with you though jax04 they need to get off there *** and make a 75mm compressor already

I tried sourcing a larger housing last year when I was running a TC and the largest anyone could get was a 1.15. I know at one point Turbonetics made bigger, but no one could get them last year. Maybe they started casting them again? Or their site is wrong.
