Best turbo and cam recommendation for 71 chevy shortbed LQ4
New to the turbo scene, I've done quite a bit of reading, but would appreciate to hear your suggestions.
Vehicle is a 71 shortbed chevy
I plan to use the existing T350 and 3.08 12 bolt for now. I have a LQ4 out of a 2006 savana van 65k, and would use the stock exhaust manifold's.
500rwhp would be great......daily driver
Im willing to spend around $800 on the turbo itself.
Any suggestions on cam for a heavy truck with the trans and gear I have?
Thanks

Masterpower T70 and a stock LQ4 cam will make 500whp pretty easily, my LQ4 made 520whp with the smallest turbined S400 with a stock cam and springs and around 13psi, it made huge low end torque. For the price of a T70 if you cant find one used and cheap you might as well buy a TC78, their only $850 and can go further in the future.

You have the room to run an s400 Borg Warner. I would do that. An s475 with the 96mm turbine and 1.32AR is $650 new and supports 1000 crank hp. It can be upgraded up to a 88mm or 91mm compressor down the road for $700(wheel, machining, and race cover) later on if you want more power. A used LS6 cam would work great or one of the Speed Inc turbo grinds. Or go custom with one from Ed Curtis.

[QUOTE=96mm turbine on a mild LQ4 would spool very late and be pretty boring on the street unless your drive around revving to 6000 the whole time.[/QUOTE]
Thanks for the advice. The AR is where I get lost. So if I was to get a tc78 what AR would be prefered for a street truck, for real crisp low end
The cam isn't a must, but I concidered that isky 212/212/112 that stock48 used, any thoughts?

TC78 T4 flange .96 a/r housing. Cheap simple 500rwhp.
PTE76GTS is a nice upgrade that will allow 500rwhp easier than the tc78.
Oh yea cam, Thunder Racings Old Man truck cam, 220/220 duration 115lsa

the s475 comes with the t6 for that price.. slow spooling..and to add t4 to that same turbo is extra $200.. i bought the t4 / .96 a/r housing,, just rember the lower the exhaust a/r the faster it will spool ,but you will loose top end power, bigger it is more top end power,,but take longer to spool.. .

Compressor / Turbine wheel determines your top end charge. I haven't seen much proof that swapping to a bigger a/r housing will increase the top end if you have a decent sized turbine wheel. Pick the turbine wheel for your power goals and go with a proven a/r housing to spool where you need the power.
