Batman <-sorry Glides will tend to be in the fastest cars. 4l80s are more street biased due to the overdrive, all out race cars have no use for the od or lower gearing of a4l80, plus a glide weighs alot less.

There are cars in the 9`s and 8`s with the 4l80`s just not as many . Guys go for the lighter th400 in race cars that mostly are towed to the track so no need for the extra 100#`s the 4l80`s weigh. Plus the 4l80 costs more.

Yep, until recently there wasn't any work put into the 4L80, so you had the glide or the 400. Give it a couple of years and you'll see a lot more cars running the 4L80.

Dave(MM) PB is 8.59 at 161 1.29 60'. Tell me a 80e can't 60 cause of the low gearing....he launches with 17psi of boost too.

Let's not forget the biggest reason that more people don't have 4L80's. They are expensive.

Yeah they are expensive if you go buy a $3500 trans. If you are a do it yourselfer you can put one in on the cheapo. Check out my thread in the trans section if you think differently. I have about $1100 in my swap and its almost done.

There was a guy on here with the screen name cablebandit and he had a 4l80e in a heavy vert and it came in at 3960 lbs and went 9.20's on pump gas with a 408.

I know he parted the car out and he doesn't even post in the FI section anymore.

I guess expensive is relative. For me, it came down to keeping the T56, dropping too much money building it up, buying an expensive clutch, still break stuff/burn through clutches, and be slower than an auto. Or, I could build up a 4L80e and get a good multidisk converter and just drive the **** out of it. By the time I sold my T56, my out of pocket was very reasonable.

I probably would have spent far more money in the long run trying to keep a T56 up and running. I do like rowing the gears though, but from what I've read, most that have done that swap never looked back.

A TH400 wasn't an option for me because I didn't want to deal with it on the highway. I know lots of people do, but I plan for mine to be more of a cruiser than a track car.

Jake will not steer you wrong. I got my valvebody from him. He has great customer support and will even give you his personal cell number if needed for help, I know he did for me.

With a decent power turbo setup you don't need a lot of gear, I run 2.73's in my 3700lb ltd, cruises down the highway just fine, heck on a road trip this spring we cruised at 90mph for quite awhile, still got 14mpg on e85 including us doing some racing and playing around. A few other cars we have around here run 3.00 or 3.08 gears and are fine also on the highway. Heck even my rx7 has only a 3.50 gear in it(with a 33" tire) so cruises down the highway at low rpm.

Im using a bone stock one in a 3400lb car at 650rwhp. Its been in there for a year and a half. Lots of street time and track passes. No signs of distress.

If I did it over again, Id try a powerglide and higher gears.

I look at Chevy express vans, had good luck getting 80e's cheaper this way.
My turbo rat's tranny was $220 plus transgo HD plus 1k worth of torque converter. I won't skimp on a torque converter with a turbo set up.

I didn't think it could be done cheaper, but you did.

I'm gear limited by the S60 rearend. 3.50 is the closest ratio I can go. I run a 28" (325/50/15) tire and it's not bad cruising around. I'm wanting to try out the 295/65/15 which is a 30" and see if I can tuck it without rubbing.
