I know it will help, but on a N/A application it would be more beneficial to have the heads ported as opposed to a boosted setup where you can turn the boost up a pound or two and make up the difference.

lol..this thread went farther than i thought. my comment to the patriots was because a guy advised me to get them...not that they made 317s. as far as wanting them ported....i searched and found that they do make a difference being ported...with any application..N/a or boosted.

I guess I do, that's why I said I am far from a expert. Im still learning about different stuff.
What kind of power difference is there between a stock set of 317s and a ported set of 317s on a motor on say 15 psi? 50hp? 100hp?

I am curious as well how beneficial it would be for me to port my 317's on my F1-A/408 setup. I am looking to upgrade this year to some Trickflow's or AFR's. What do you guy's think are hands down the best heads for my application?

I'm in the same boat (stock 317s on a 408) but i only have a d1. I have been looking at the Texas Speed ported ls3's or ditching the D1 for an F1-R. Texas Speeds ls3s are there own casting (thicker) so should hold up to boost fairly well, and outflow the TF and AFR's. Just been thinking about which is the best bang for the buck, lol.

I use Patriot heads on my Corvette, couldn't be happier. My Vette ran 12.40 with cam and bolt on's , only change was a set of Patriots and I ran a 11.87.
As a matter of fact I called them just to say thanks.

Optimized ports for any engine in any engine configuration, whether it be a weed wacker or a top fuel engine is going to gain power everywhere over as cast ports and combustion chambers. That doen't mean a N/A 346 LS1 and a turbo 346 or even a supercharged 346 are going to perform best with Company X's port job. Each application has different needs. CNC porting is NOT better than hand porting period. It's repeatable and much less time consuming than someone who knows what they are doing by hand and porting by hand REQUIRES each port be tested on a flow bench to get all of the ports flowing near the same. Every CNC porting program started with someones hand port job. Research what engine builders build FI engines and have porting programs, LME? If Popular Hot Rodding ever allows FI builds and limits the head castings it will be VERY interesting.
