I bought the Holley unit with the coils and all the harnesses. I just don't udnderstand why people are trying to get something like this on the cheap. It does not make sense to me. Hell, this thing is a control center for your whole car. If you already have 40k into the build like I do. Whats another 1k or 500 extra that makes your car run and act like you want it.

I know all stand alones have they're issues. And I know some are better than others. But we are talking about something that controls your whole car! All I'm saying is that people should do they're research before they buy. Either way I look at it I bought the Holley System, Coils, the Touch Screen, All The harnesses, etc.. And it cost me less than a brand new BS3 unit. I chose the Holley because I wanted to see if I liked it or not. If you guys are complaing about $500 dollars on coils that make the system work properply than just go carb and be done with it!

Maybe I'm over thinking this because I work in the IT industry but in my train of thought I always wanted something thats the latest and greatest and not something that is just ok.

12psi on several extended runs tonight. I'm using the D585 coils, mounted beside the oil pan on each side. So far so good, keeping my fingers crossed. I'm going to have to get to the track or dyno in order to raise the boost up any more. Getting too hairy for the street at these levels.

Is that the hottest GM coil? What did it come of of? My 2003 truck has the coils with the heat sink on them and a guy at the track told me they were junk right before it ran 9.7 lol

Just mine lol...

Holley told me the reason the boxes are blowing up is the stock coil is only good for 500hp. I asked them how my 4800 lb truck rums 9's with 500 hp and they didn't have much to say...

And stock computers with stock coils have gone 1000+ hp. Must be the junk coils messing up the badass holley computer. Yeah, that's it.

Wonder if something as simple as a diode put inline could stop the feedback issue..

The stuff they used doesn't appear to have a high enough voltage rating. -saved a few bucks-
And that won't fix the RF noise either.

All surface mount I'd imagine, not a simple fix.....they may have ran out of room on the board and tried to cut a corner.
or
They just failed to test with stock coils and 20+ psi.
And I'd guess they only had maybe a MS instead of a PHD working on it too.
I can understand the OEM's trying to save a few bucks when they order parts at a million pcs a year. But the aftermarket should try to make their stuff last a little longer.....

I'm personally waiting till this is resolved to run stock coils and boost control before I buy a Dominator. Otherwise I'll get an AEM or MS3.
Or maybe I'll goggle VEMS and see what the Euro's are up to these days. Though I need to stay away from the open source PCM's. Way too tempting for me to spend 6 months playing with the programming. I procrastinate enough on my build as it is.

So what about running the MSD Blaster ls coils with high boost and the holley HP?

Was on the phone today and heard they should have boost control solenoids out in 2 weeks or so.

Any advantage of the MSD coil over stock? if not, which used coils should I be looking for (15+ psi 5.3 turbo)

Sounds like you talked to the wrong guy. They know why stock coils aren't working and that isn't the reason.

No. MSD Coils are garbage. You can take your chances with the stock coils, use the Holley coils or wait until the problem is resolved. They are very close. We hope to be testing something within the next 2 weeks.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand flyback voltage is bad and you need to protect against it.....and I don't have a PhD or MS. In my opinion, building a system that REQUIRES you to use their coils, aka another 500, is simply hiding a poorly designed system.

I have to agree. I bet they had to completely redesign the board/system. And in doing that trying to make it fit the cases they have made. I'm sure this problem is a nightmare for them. Hopefully they get it fixed. The coils weren't the only features not working. Seems like 2 or 3 step features were still a no go or something.

I can tell you this, the ease of the setup and start from scratch, i quickly forgot about about the extra cost of the coils, and to be honest, aside from the two back wires crossing over the top, (which im going to route around and down) i actually kind of like the way my engine looks. Almost helps to mask the enormous truck intake, lol
