240sx 4.8l turbo build and turbo selection
It has come time to pick and buy a turbo and get my kit fabbed. here is the rundown on the parts/build.
gm 4.8l with floating pin rods and pistons
Arp rod bolts
Arp main studs
Arp head studs
New bearings(h series) and rings with top ring opened to .022
Ls9 head gaskets
stock 243 castings
2004 z06 cam
patriot dual golds
ls7 lifters
comp pushrods
comp timing set
melling oil pump
walbro 400 fuel pump
60lb injectors
corvette regulator(for now)
PP fuel rails
LS1 intake and tb
Truck manifolds with v bands welded on
2'' crossovers(not quite equal length but pretty close)
Turbo up front on drivers side.
Front mount intercooler(1000hp precision core)
tial bov
tial44mm wg
all 3'' charge piping
Car will have a t56 for now and hope to keep it a t56 forever. I drive the car on the street quite a bit to the local meets and etc but other wise its used for the drag strip. Car weight will be between 2500 and 2600 lbs. Car had an ls1 last year and went 9.74 on 150hit and 10.49 n/a. Ran good but i wanted a more and wanted to try a little something different so i went with a 4.8.
I am really wanting something that will have good street manners, spool up needs to be decent. I am thinking something in the 72-76mm range. I have debated on everything from a tc76-s475. I am wanting to stay with a t4 flange but i want the ability to push for 7-800whp. I am wanting to get everything together and going on the fuel system i have now and change that mid summer or fall. Looking to make around 600whp on 93 right now, then as i said, and push the limits later.
What do you guys think as far as a turbo for my build? Right now the choice is the s475 with a t4 flange. 83mm turbine wheel.
Thanks in advance. All criticism welcome!!! And i know i probably should have left the ls1 in there and went this route but oh well.

I would love to get the precision but it's $1400+ and the Borg in a t4 can be had for just over 800. I am a little worried the tc turbos will run out of steam before I'm done pushing this thing. I have read a lot on the 7675 and I know it's a stand out unit but if the Borg can get close, and still spool the same/similar it will be what I go with. Any input on any Garrett units? 4202? Or similar?

I'm not positive but, there is a guy on here (skinnies?) with a RX7 and a 5.3 that ran a tc78 into the 8's. I'm sure either a tc76-78 would meet your goals and spool would be great.

Skinnies car is nothing like what I have. His car is super light and runs a glide iirc. I am sure the tc series turbos would fit the bill, however...I am not considering these turbos at this point. Never been a turbonetics fan either.
I am really hoping this motor stays together as I am pretty sure I have built the most expensive stock 4.8L in history.
I will take pics of the engine tomorrow, it should be going in the car tomorrow. Then starting the fab work.

Sounds like the BW turbos are a great bang for the buck. Not the fastest spooling, but they make killer power. I don't think any turbo you mentioned will be a bad choice.

I know his car is nothing like yours. You did say it will weigh 2500-2600 lbs. which is close to his weight. Just to give you an idea, my car weighed in at a portly 3470 lbs and made 775 rwhp through a th400 and a 9". Was good enough to put it in the bottom 9's @ high 140's to low 150's.

Pics added to first post.
Update: Motor is in. Have to button up the front suspension, put the driveshaft in, and put the intake on, then off to the fab shop!!!!
Going to clock the alternator slightly from the stock f body position. It is interfering with my oil drain and there isnt a top hole in the block for it. Probably take it from "12 o'clock to 2 o'clock". That will give me plenty of space for my oil drain and still leave plenty of room for my turbo stuff.
I was really happy to see the motor back in and see the abundance of space i have. I was worried it was going to be tight but there is tons of space on the drivers side.
A few questions to the experienced guys...
How much power will a 3.5'' down pipe support? How much power will a full 3'' cold side support?
I will update again tomorrow as i am hoping to have the car on the ground and loaded up on the trailer.
and a quick pic from the side of the car
and from the back

they are bc coilovers 8k/6k. Nothing special, set fairly stiff. I have a set of ebay rucas and traction arms, self aligned. Wheel and tires were weld draglites 15x8 5.5bs and 15x3 fronts. mt 26x11.50 et streets. Welded stock diff and stock axles.
Changing it a bit for this go around. Doing a j30 lsd(freshish) and a mt 28x9 slick(27.3'' tall) Hoping to have quite a bit more gear and ill probably spin the 4.8 a bit to try and stay in 4th. I was well into 5th on the nitrous passes and bounced the limiter for a good ways on motor. Limiter was set to 6750 on the ls1.
