Default Stock rear, how much can it take??

Ok, I have a 1981 Turbo TA, and installed a LQ4, and GT45, It started whining, and I had a guy (rebuild) it, any way it started whining even worst, then he tells me he didnt change the gears cause I wanted the same gear ratio! Do I spend another $500 for new gears, and labor, or do I need to get a whole new setup? The gear is 3.08s, in a 8.5, he installed a new posi unit, bearing, and seals. Will the rear take the abuse?

The 8.5 10 bolts are strong. I would upgrade the axles with c-clip eliminators also. Weld the tubes too for added strength.

heeeeell no. do not put any money in that thing. its prob whining because its leaking. get up under it and see if you have any fluid on your torque arm bolts. if so fill her up or have the pinion seal changed at the dealer for like 200 and be easy on it....do not ever build up a 10 bolt...put that money towards a 9 and dont ever worry about it again...the 10 bolt is a weak piece of **** that has been known to have problems even at stock power levels....much less a turbo lq4. im not sure this belong in the forced induction section though.

i've heard stories of people running 10's on a stock 10 bolt and others having them explode on bone stock trim. i say just drive the hell out of it. when it breaks upgrade it. as above, not worth the $$ building it up or fixing it

Don't put et streets or drag slicks on it and it will last for a while. Et streets and slicks and it will be gone quick.

This car doesnt have a torque arm. Its a second gen car. It has leaf springs. THe 8.5 10 bolt is a strong rear. Its second to the 12 bolt. The 8.5 is way stronger than the 7.5 you are referring to. People have gone low 1.30's on slicks and ran in the 8's with them.

Its 8.5 10 bolt, not 7.5.

Once again, wrong rearend, lol.

Op, rebuild it with good gears, c clip eliminators and weld the tubes and you will never hurt it.

the rear is fine, best gears you can get is factory GM gears they are cheap and set up nice., run a set of moser axles and it will be fine....GN guys are running in the 9's with them.

I had a 8.5 10-bolt built by Pro-Gear in San Diego. Eaton posi, 31 spline axles and estimated to take 550HP. Pretty stout piece.

Alot of people lumping the 7.5" 10 bolt with the 8.5" 10 bolt, the number of bolts isnt what makes it strong or weak. Its like a saying an LS7 is slow because you used to have a flathead v8 and it was slow, they both have 8 cylinders.
