Basically it takes 50% more methanol by volume than gasoline to achieve the same amount of power, but methanol carries a higher octane than most any race fuels, carries more heat dissipating properties than gasoline which in a boosted application requires no intercooler, in many heads up racing venues that is good for a 100lb weight break over an A2W intercooler and to top it all off you can usually get methanol in volume for 2.50-3.00 a gallon and that is on the higher price range side.
5 gallon pail of M1 is 25 bucks at my local speed/nitrous/fuel spot. I'm pretty sure Phil is probably using M5 though which carries the same oxygenates at Q16, VP113 and VP Import fuel does. MTBE is naasty stuff.

Phil, bad as setup. Just for comparison and to give you a idea, I am tuning a 632 BBF twin promod 94's, precision 225's and 550's on M5, on BS3, MSD 8 ignition. It's real happy at 4.1 afr and timming @ 21* 18#boost. running EGT'S in all 8cyls and got good logs on temps for the m5
