Default Should I run a meth kit??

A little run down of the car:

D1 with stock short block 99 ss, 8 rib and 10-10.5# and a front mount.
Makes 581/525 on a dyno jet
IAT temps driving around and a few spirited wot pulls seem to be darn close to ambient. Would I gain much going to a snow performance ect meth kit? I would obviously gain a little power by doing so. Would this be a concern adding power to what I already make on the stock bottom end or would it actually make it safer makeing more power with the meth? Im not really concerned about getting the most power out of my setup as I am with makeing it as safe as possible.

Absolutely. Here's what I've found out running FI and a stock shortblock. The rings are gapped pretty damn tight from the factory. I think the spec on them was something like 0.009-0.015". Well, horsepower is heat. The greater the heat, the more the rings will expand and close that gap, till they finally butt together and take out the tops of your pistons. I took out the top and second ring land on my #7 piston as well as the second ring land on my #5 piston. I also had ambient temps, had no knock, ran 13-14 degrees of timing, and afr was in the mid 10s to low 11s, in other words, my tune was very conservative. But I also saw almost 15lbs of boost at 6800rpm and was maxing out my injectors. So figure I was making north of 650 rwhp. Methanol and water injection helps to keep the combustion temps cool, especially the water aspect since it doesn't ignite, so it actually helps to cool the pistons.

I wish I had installed my water/meoh kit from day one.

I have used and installed a ton of kits from Snow Performance and they work great. The guys at Snow are great too if you have questions etc. I have actually used them on N/A and nitrous set ups as well. I have not used or compared them to other systems though. I am one of those "if it ain't broke don't fix it" kind of people.

I forgot to mention that I would 100% absolutely positively run meth on a boosted stock short block.

I think most kits are all pretty similar. Seems like how it's controlled is was separates them/drives the price up. On my Toyota, I run a DevilsOwn low boost kit with a Hobbs switch set at about 4 psi. I don't have a way to increase timing, so I spray straight water

I run a AIS kit love it! I would upgrade to braided stainless if I were you. Meth is why my car is still alive.

AlkyControl by Julio. One of the best progressive alcohol injection systems out there. They are on 9 second Buicks, so they must be good enough for this application..

I think they are in the 550-600 range. But they are worth it for that price. You run STRAIGHT Methanol through his pump (best cooling effect). No oil additive or anything. If you cannot find meth, you can even use denatured alcohol off the shelf of a hardware store (expensive, but good in a pinch, also little harsher on the pump). I put the kit in myself in only a couple hours (17 year old mechanic here). Somebody on here is using it in their 580HP procharged LS1 on a stock short block.

Thats not too bad considering the snow performance stage 2 is around $400 or so. I thought the added water was for the cooling properties?

Straight methanol is the best at cooling.

No, it's not. It evaporates quicker, so yes, it will give you a lower reading at the IAT sensor, but once it hits the combustion chamber and ignites, it adds to the overall heat in the chamber. Water on the other hand, cools as it evaporates, which is slower at ambient temps, but once it hits the chamber, pulls out considerably more heat, and since it doesn't ignite, it doesn't add anymore heat back into the piston/chamber like methanol does.

Does methanol make more power, YES, but it also adds more heat. On a stock shortblock, the pistons and rings can't handle the extra heat, remember horsepower is directly related to heat. More power, more heat.

Here's a chart showing the difference between how much heat the methanol absorbs versus water...

100% Water is on the left, 100% meoh is on the right.

I'm not opposed at all to running 100% meoh because you will make more power than mixing in water with it, but if you're after a cooling effect, 50/50 is what I would (and will) run.

Remember, knock is also very sensitive to heat, hence why we run cooler plugs.
