Default Overtorquing Head Studs?

Is anyone overtorquing their ARP head studs for boost? ARP recommends 80 ft-lbs. After a search, 85 ft-lbs seems common and I ever read about someone doing 130 ft-lbs which seems excessively dangerous.

Well they did revise thier original torque specs. I used to do @80 on the standard ARP head studs never did anything more than that. I have seen a shop try 100 on the standard head studs and it snapped. If you want to torque them down to 100ftlbs then buy the ARP 2000 material head studs or the L19's. GL!

So regular arp head studs are not the "2000" version?

I believe the regulars are 8740s. I've heard 2000s are better but not sure how much better - especially when compared to some higher end studs.

I've searched for arp 2000 head studs, there's very little info.

Anyone have part #s?

The ARP 2000 head studs are about $200-300 more than the standard ones. More clamping strength and better material.

I had no idea arp had different versions of their studs good to know. 130ft sounds kinda nuts to me.

Damn those heads studs are still $450 with my Summit discount. I had no idea either that they had two different head studs

It gets to the point that more torque only stresses the stud more and does nothing to seal the head gasket.

That's what my thought was. Doesn't it get to a point that the weakness is the cylinder head thickness and not the strength of the studs?

I torqued mine to 80ft/lbs.

they actually have three versions of these studs, 8740 2000 and the L19, nobody has them listed but I called arp directly and they do have them, I want to say 699 for the set

We use 100 max on our 1/2-inch head studs. Anything beyond that and you risk crushing the aluminum on the heads. We usually end up around 90 on the 11mm ARP stuff.

Hmm wonder if I should ditch my 8740's for some 2000's on my turbo 346...

Yes, if you could find a stud that could take a torque of 10000000ftlbs it won't matter, its the head that will fail.

I torqued my 1/2 studs to 100ft pounds and I was quite nervous on the last cycle! No way would I try torquing the standard studs to 100 ft pounds 80 would be the max IMO.

So if I was going to run 317 heads on a ls1 block and plan to run boost up to 17-18 psi, you think my 8740 arp head studs will suffice?

I don't want to lift heads..

Opinions?
