A small update…..

Looks like I will be looking into a 4L80 conversion after all.

Oh that hurts to watch man. I am dreading that happening to me. I dropped $5000 into the tick super magnum t56/6060 conversion. How built was your t56 before it went to rest?

I don't remember what was exactly in it. It wasn't viper spec or anything but it had all good stuff when i had it rebuilt. I guess not enough, eh? oh well.

Trust me, I 100% felt your pain. After a year building my car the first time, I drove it to the tuner, he did a tune on it and i was driving it back home. First pull on the highway leaving his shop I shattered my mainshaft. This was a "built t-56" supposedly able to handle 750 ftlb. We stopped at 650rwhp on the dyno for that day. Come to find out when tick tore it down, the tranny i bought was all oem.

Yes it was built to handle "750+" guess it gave up the ghost. Was fine for roll racing, first time trying to launch it kaboom.

So was it a stock output shaft or an uprated 30 or larger tooth ?

I've been very lucky with boxes, I ran many 10 flat quarters with a totally stock T56, and around 1.7 60ft launches, 3700lbs race weight.

I'm actually using the stock box again after having some shift problems with the "uprated" box.

I'd put a TH400 & 4K stall in it with a 3.08 gear and dominate the street

Put a 30 spline mainshaft in it, fluid pump and keep rockin. That stock main didn't owe you any favors after the power you hit it with. The rest of the guts have a good shot at being just fine.

Yeah.....pretty sure it's not supposed to do that.....

I am all about the automatics for the track, but you are building the Mustang as the track car. Why not keep the T/A a stick car for playing around on the street?

Nice ride! sorry to hear about your trans failure, been there a couple times but what do you expect with a stock output/input shaft, bearings ect. T-56. I wouldn't be so hung up the "750" torque rating. It handled it on the pulls, just not dropping the clutch on a heavy car. Time to upgrade to the 31 spline. I just got my T-56 magnum, took it to the track with 400 miles on it and did 22 passes and 7 roll races, 300 miles round trip with no issues or noises. They claim 900RWT rating. Im not at your power level but still a great trans that I plan on throwing 8-900 at next year. You said it yourself, too much fun on the streets. Get the sprayers installed and put a pump on it.

Sold the transmission locally yesterday, no turning back now.

With a pair of hair dryers on there, you'll enjoy the automatic more than the stick now anyway!

Your car will run quite a bit better because you won't lose boost between gears and if you also put a stall in there, you'll forget ever having the stick and wonder why you didn't do it sooner! Though your back tires are going to hate you!

I can't wait to hear about your results!

That's a shame but you can still call someone like Tick and order one. I got the level 5 TR6060 and it shifts SO much better than a factory T56 it's not even comparable. I got it with the spray oiler. Take your money and put a better 6 gear in it. You'll be a little more money (maybe) but save the headache of changing in a trans that your car isn't wired for or that the computer isn't ready to control. All this adds up in price too if your still considering..

He wouldn't be the first to do it and there is probably plenty of info on this site to help him through the project. His car would dyno less, but be faster with an auto. Put an efficient stall in the car to get him off the line and get the car moving and then let the Big Dog eat! It will cover ground Very quickly, especially if you're roll racing. No searching for the right gear because the trans takes care of it. No losing boost between shifts because the trans takes care of it. The trans takes care of everything. He just has to steer.

I'm not knocking a manual, and your advice is good, but automatics and turbo's go together like peanut butter and jelly (unless you're allergic to nuts ).

Just my opinion.

Glides are great transmissions if you're not turning your car or driving a distance. Overdrive is Definitely worth having. Now, if he puts glide on with a Gear Vendors OD unit, then I agree...a Glide would work out!

Once again, that's just my opinion.

I drive mine on the highway for 70-80mi trips all the time. 28" tire and 3.27 gear. Not sure I agree at all that overdrive is needed with this type of setup. Now many other setups for sure but the turbo cars end up needing a lot of gear/tire which works out with a glide.

3.27 + 28" tire
65mph is a little over 2500rpm

But IIRC he wants overdrive still I think?

I def want overdrive in this car. I have the mustang for a pure race application.
