Truckin, Big Bang 5.3L
Anyone seen the latest issue of Truckin Magazine? It's a follow up of the Hot rod Mags "Big Bang Theory 4.8L" They try to blowup a stock bottom end 5.3L LM7 (2003 model). They push it past 1300hp. Check it out, it's a good read...

I bought it today. Just a failed lifter and pushrod at 1,308hp. Supposedly a part 2 to come. They did kinda cheat though, they put Trick Flow 215 heads, a cam, LSxRT intake, and 90mm TB on it. Just to help get the baseline hp up, but still, they put $2,500-3k worth of parts on to get more hp. I really wanna do twin 76's but the boost won't come until the upper rpm's and I wanna keep the rev limiter at 6k like stock, and reach max hp before or right at 6k rpm's.

Yeah, they gapped the top and second ring to .035 for EXTRA safety lmao. I'm sure they had a **** ton of blow by.
Camwndr, I agree. If they put some quality components in it and cheaper heads that flow probably better than the ones they used, they could have been even higher in the HP. But it's fun to see what a "stock" engine will do.

Twin 76s are a bit much for a 5.3L like you said power would be way late in the rpms. I think twin 62s up to 66s would make most of the power and be much more liveable in the lower-middle rpms. And what could you do if you changed those Trick Flow heads and LSxRT intake for some 317s with good valves and forged pistons, rods and an LS6 intake???

When you replace or MODIFY the stock parts IMO. In other words it isn't a stock shortblock if you replace or modify the stock parts, which opening ring gap does, but thats another battle. People want to be able to do all kinds of things, but keep just the stock rods/crank/pistons and call it 100% stock.

when it has been modified or altered from the way it left the factory. a motor with ring gaps that have been modified is not stock. they are referring to the shortblocks in these articles. so anything outside the shortblock is fair game.

Yeah once anything has been done to it, it's no longer stock. But I think you can still call it stock even if you do file the ring gaps, all the stock parts are still there, you just modified one part. I'd say modified stock engine.
I don't think mine will classify as stock, I'll be using 241 heads, arp studs, new headgaskets, bearings, and a small cam.
