Something went wrong, ticking and smoke...

It has to be going down, its the only thing that would explain the smoke and crankcase pressure. I've started work on the stripdown, should have the head off tomorrow morning.

Pulled the head, can't see a problem.
Piston looks fine, gasket was sealed perfectly. No pitting, no marks, no scratches or cracks. Spark plug was also fine when I pulled it. Carbon matches all other pistons, cleaned off easily.
Haven't pulled the valves, but theres no marks on the head to indicate a problem. Will get the tools and pull them out tomorrow hopefully.

do you think it may have spiked at some point? wish aluminum was a little more forgiving. Looks like you will have to pull it and have another machined. It wont be that bad if you can assemble it yourself. I think a block can be had for 300-500 and an honest machine shop can clean her up and hone it for 1000-1300 ish usually.

Is 30thou safe on an LS2 ?
I know my current block is only 0.005" and will be doing likewise with my next one.
I want the liners as thick as possible.
If all other parts are good, all you need is another block, so the financial cost shouldnt be too bad.
Although I'd seriously consider keeping any pistons/block as close to a factory bore size as possible to retain strength.
Although that's pretty **** damage...at least you found the problem.

I wish it was that easy, stuff is alot more expensive in Australia. I've priced up an LY6 block at $1500 AUD (AUD and USD are pretty well 1:1 at the moment), + $800-$1000 in machine work + new bearings and gaskets. Won't be a cheap process and I really don't have that kind of cash at the moment.

I knew it wasn't going to lasto forever, I always just wanted it to give me a sign before it detonated all over the road, so I could save the rotating assembly. Looks like I can salvage everything except the block, so thats pretty good I suppose.
I looked into the ERL option as I'd much rather sleeve this block than replace it with an iron block, but unfortunately that process will cost me roughly $4000AUD by the time I get it back in Australia.

It's not much fun in the UK either. Everything has to be sourced from the US and ends up costing a lot of money.
Still cheaper from the US than anywhere that has anything in the UK would sell for though. There is only a small selection of cars that use the LS platform here, and they are all Aus imports. At least you guys get plenty of LS based cars in Aus

Yeah plenty of LS powered cars here, but 2:1 markup. Generally its significantly cheaper to buy from the US including postage than it is to buy locally. The sad part is, you also generally get a response faster from the US AND the product arrives faster than buying locally...
