Default Questions about emissions and turbos

I had a quick question concerning emissions and turbos.

I currently run an ATI D1SC on my car that is supposed to be emissions legal, which was one of the main reasons I went with a blower. However, a great deal of people seem to be running turbos on the street.

Now while I am sure there are "ways" of getting around this. Are their any official methods of getting around this problem? Can a turbo be made to pass emissions atleast for the test?

Emissions = Fairfax Co. VA

Sincerely

all depends on your emmisions, and what they do.

only incon keeps the stock cats, in the stock locations, so the rest will fail a very strict visual test.

in places where you just get a tailpipe test, your fine, but in a place like cali, where you need a carb number for any aftermarket parts, you won't be able to pass it 100% legit, to my knowledge.

but there are always ways

I agree with slow.

Let me add that there is nothing related to the turbo that would make the car fail emissions. Unless, of course, some of the emissions items have been deleted, agressive cam, etc. I passed the old CT roller test fine. I'm due in another few months and have no worries.

Eh its a grey area around Fairfax. I'm to my knowlege the only turbo'd F-body in NOVA. My plates are good but my inspection is dead. In other words there are ways to avoid emissions legally but not inspection. Cats are part of VA inspection. So if you get a station that only cares if you have a cat you'll be fine as long as there is one. If you can't find one well make some friends

Hey

Thanks for the replies.

Concerning the issue of cats on the inspection. Could you setup the exhaust to run with off road pipes and then just install the cats when it is time for emissions? I have FLP headers on my car and I run without the cats all the time (on the track ofcourse ).

The major reason I ask is that I would like to switch my car to a turbo setup instead of running the blower. Overall they just seem to be making better power and without the issue of belt slip.

Well the law states you cant even move the cats from their stock location. But you can do what your asking. The other problem you will run into is that if you go single turbo then you have only one pipe exiting the rear, thus no dual cats. If you go twins you can get away with it. But again it all depends on the inspection station you go to.
