Question Pcm's suitable for high boost?

A friend here wants to boost his c5, low boost initially but high boost once he's had an engine rebuild. The query is, how adaptable will the stock pcm be using say LS1 edit or something similar. Will high boost 10-15 psi be way beyond the stock pcm paramaters even with Edit. What about the map sensor, can it be uprated/changed to 3 bar? Part of me says go with the stock pcm for obvious reasons in a stock car. The other part of me says use an after market pcm that's fully mappable. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

you can do either and will get diferent sugestions i am sure. what motor is this going on? i max the maf about 12psi on a 6.0 with a cam and open down pipe is the reason i ask and if you dont plan on maxing the maf then the stock pcm is more than capiable.

i like the stock pcm, it is soo easy to make it drive nice and i think with the aftermarket systems it isn't quite so easy(no actual experience though), there are easy ways to tune with edit and a stock pcm to get around the maf maxing but they do not compensate for weather changes or anything like that.

If he is going to be using a supercharger, then keep the stock PCM. Adding proper fuel via boost is easy and repeatable.

If he is going to be using a turbo, then save yourself the headache and go with an aftermarket system now. Turbo's and their variable boosting points make it very difficult to provide a safe, repeatable, and reliable tune on a maxed MAF car.

There are other tricks out there (cutting the MAF freq in half) and such, but after a while it would just have been easier to go with an aftermarket system.

Thank you gents.

This engine is in a c5. I'm wary about using edit not being the most computer literate person on the BB. I deal more with retrofit conversions so prefer aftermarket pcm's. So from reading your posts it would seem that a low boost engine may or may not benefit from edit and there could be MAF problems if I go for higher boost levels. I don't want a dissatisfied customer and I'd be happy to ditch the maf? Is that possible or would there be error codes in abundance? Could I just run a 3 bar MAP sensor with Edit and no MAF? Does anybody offer a 3 bar sensor to fit the stock intake manifold?

Thanks. Mike.

I run a GM 3 bar map with a FAST bank/bank aftermarket ECU.

Aftermarket ECU choices:
1) FAST $2500-$3000
2) ACCEL Gen7, $2500-3000
3) TSI, $1000-1200 (Australian piggyback)
4) BS3, $2500 projected (John Meany)

#3 will not work with leaded gas and still requires the use of a MAF but perhaps only for idling.

69bird,

I had one of the TSI boxes and sold it to Stealth, maybe he will chime in.

At a glance...
-AUS manufacturer
-Mac @ FastTrack was the exclusive US distributor
-I had the 2nd box exported here and sold it to Stealth
-Can support 2 or 3 bar MAP
-Can support low or high impedance injectors
-Had boost controller input
-Used MAF and 02 sensors, not leaded gas compatible

I sold the box at a time when I decided I was going to run 110 leaded at the track.

Mac Mackenzie is a hard man to get a hold of, and I think he is a bit of a procrastinator or is understaffed. See what he says or maybe Stealth is selling his so he can run leaded gas.

I forget if they have a website.

I'd check with Stealth first.

I know someone locally who has a new TSI for the Ls1... i have pushed and pushed for him to sell it to me (if you are readying this i STILL want it!! ). I think he got it at a really good price or as a sample as he is a leading DFI seller/tuner in our area.
I just briefly looked through the manual. Some of it was using current Ls1 tables and the TSI modifies them, other ones the TSI had it's own tables. I know it had a section for boost and seemed to eliminate the maxed MAF issue. The other beauty and main reason i wanted it was because it was real time tuning changes like full blown DFI.

John, is there any other person i could get it from a reasonable price and time?

Thanks

Jarrod, is that guy called East Coast something or other? That's who had the first box.

Mac Mackenzie was the exclusive distributor. I'm a bit uncomfortable suggesting you contact him since I know of a few shops that have been unable to consistently get a hold of him and that's a problem for me.

John,

Thanks for that. Does the 3 bar sensor fit in the stock position inside the intake manifold?

Mike.

Joe Overton is who I am talking about, but I can't remember what the name of his business is.

I appreciate the concern.... and I agree I also have a problem with vendors who don't like answering their phone and don't call you back. The customer should not have to consistently call back and track the vendor down just to find out whats going on.
