Default Aps people step in

So just under 10k miles the stock aps turbos decided to start smoking. I knew it was going to happen sooner or later but they worked for a while. No rubbing or excessive play on the shafts. My question is has anyone just bought a rebuild kit for these and had any luck. I am happy with the power level so there is no need for LG's or DKT's. I found genuine Mitsubishi rebuild kits for $100.00. Would this work for me or are the centers that bad?

I would junk the centers. Lucky you got 10k out of em, I got 300 miles Replaced them with the (Ebay)Kando dynamics TD0Hs(pretty sure those are it). Not sure if they are still on Ebay or not as I bought mine in 09 I think. Havent had an issue yet, knock on wood.

You could also do genuine MHI 20G CHRAs, should cost less than 1000$.

The CHRAs are garbage from APS. We tried to rebuild them and the compressors were out of balance and the shafts were hit and miss, which is why we threw the whole thing in the trash and started over.

I was hoping that since I got some pretty good miles out of the turbos(compared to others) I could get by rebuilding them. PMed another member that has been going strong after a year on rebuilding. Mine probably have 50ish passes on them. I have been very pleased with them so far. Drove it today, still smoking just wanted to make sure. I took off the exhaust to see if it is just one or both. They both have oil dripping from the CHRA. I will know tomorrow.

Man those APS GT35's are pricey. Cost more than the LG's which are proported to outflow GT35's. I'm in the same boat as you guys with my APS's after about 7-8k(estimated) miles. No track passes but plenty of fun on the streets. I was looking at the center carts on ebay and noticed some TD06h 20g's with the GTX billet compressor wheels going for not much more than the kando carts. Does anyone know if these will fit the APS kits? I get a bit lost when looking at carts and trying to figure out what numbers relay to the part that actually clamps onto the center cart. Hopefully not threadjacking, just trying to throw out more options into the mix if these are truly swapable.

well LG are journal. these are Ball Bearing.

LG still has the little exhaust housings. these have a big 1.02 AR

there is a big difference between the LG and the orginal APS gt35's

and even a LARGER difference between the LG and the DKT upgrades.
---------------------------------------

i understand you are happy with your power... i was also was. but after replacing the centers 3 times and having a well know mit/dsm shop rebuild them. i decided itwas time for ball bearing. i really dont think the journal likes getting pushed that hard with a v8 in the little ar housings. i guess to each there own.. but i just got tired of putting money in those things. got these GT35's.... then shortly after bought DKT's upgrades. and LOVE THEM to death.

Gotcha, that makes more sense. I'm still at work so I wasnt able to load the pics on that ad for the GT35's so I kind of figured they were without the hotside housings and would swap into the stock fbody hotside housings. I misread. The DKTs are what I dream about replacing mine with but timing always seems to be against me. I'm almost done breaking in my new clutch and have a base tune in the car for my upgraded fuel components (switching to e85) so my car is going to be hitting the dyno for a dyno tune before too long and I wont have enough for DKTs by then. If i push things off too much it'll be snowing out and I'll have to deal with that and emissions early next year so the sooner i can get things done the better. Ugggggg why cant things just work out for once.

I have busy working on the car and the new garage. Its cold and winter is here in Iowa so I thought I would hop on here and give an update. I ended up deciding to get rebuild kits for the turbos. I had a Texas Speed ORY and a Hooker catback. I was hoping it was only going to be one turbo smoking. It was getting late in the year so I just wanted to limp it through until this winter. After taking off the exhaust to see which one was smoking I noticed a great increase in power and lost all lag. It was like a different animal. Best thing about it was all smoking stopped. I ended up leaving the exhaust off and retuning the VE table and ran 3 tenths faster in the 1/4 mile. I never thought the back pressure from the exhaust would make that much difference. The car ran strong, cooler, and stopped smoking. No more oil in the catch can even. I have the rebuild kits but no plans of doing anything to the turbos unless issues arise again.
When I was installing my kit I noticed the bango bolt for the oil feed lines on the turbos were only 1/16" if that. I work at John Deere in the engines RD department. I asked all of the turbo engineers and they said that journal bearing turbos don't need an orfice. So I hogged the bolt out with a lot bigger drill bit and didn't think twice about it. But I'm starting to wonder if my success so far with the stock turbos is that I'm not starving them for oil. Or Im the luckiest guy to buy a APS kit.
