That would be a minimum if you actually want to build it for towing. However if you run a bigger turbo like a lot of these guys are suggesting, it would probably be a waste to upgrade to that radiator.

I'm not heartbroken that I'm not driving a 97 dodge, regardless of the powertrain.

I have a lq4 with a Nv4500. A 26 ft 13ft tall toy hauler And 305/70r16. I have issues pulling step grades speed drops off in 4th pedal to the floor from 80-50 and I have to down shift to 3rd to maintain 55mph. I was thinking about adding a supercharger and the turbo setup might work for me too.
For comparison I test drove a 08 with lq9 and 6l80 on 295/70r18 in tow haul mode and it pulled fine. Less drama no dropping under 63 even had cruise set at 70 on steep hills. Pretty sure the extra gears and the torque multiplication from the converter is a huge help. Lq9 little bump in compression.
The lq4 has less compression I figured it be a better canidate for boosted application. My concern is fuel requirement. And if it will be enough to improve my situation. Trying to see what it would take to boost the current truck or if I'm better off to replace it. I'm not trying to out tow a Duramax I'm just trying to keep up with them. I tow through Colorado, Wyoming, south Dakota, and Nebraska. I've never done a fi application.

Bump. I'm looking at doing the same thing here. I pull 10k-15k pretty often through hills, and the NA 6.0l doesn't work all that well. Am I going to be able to keep it cool enough and keep it from getting KR? I'd like to make a lot of torque at 2000-2500 rpms.

What about a trans? Can I get a stock 4l80e to handle 500-600lb ft? Or will it need to be built?

I sold my 07 lq4 nv4500. I bought a new body style 2015 6.0. It pulls alot better. Trans temps get about 190-200 pulling the grades in Colorado. Mostly around 170 It has a bigger tank and gets about 6-8towing depending on wind and terrain. Usually stays in 5th in tow mode if it sneaks into 6th I get 8. I tow 2-3 times a year and my truck cost half of what a Duramax costs and less than a used 80k Duramax.

That's a cool old piece. Nice job

my 03 lq4 tows fine in the area i live. It's actually rather quick after a few changes i have made. I threw the dragy on it and it ran a 15.5@ 91.x mph. I think 14s could be possible with a good cai, headers, rockers, tb ss intake some more tuning which should enhance towing.

Cool truck , mine is completely torn apart and it looks like I'll never finish it. I built a durakon to fill my towing needs and now its parked with a broken crank!!!
