Default Stock cam turbo spooling ability

Generally speaking, do stock-type cams spool the turbos the quickest?

Which cam event(s) has a greater effect on spooling?

I would think a stock cam would almost make instant spool. Why wouldn't it? It would give up by 6k but it should build boost like crazy. At least that is my understanding.

Just because stock cams peak low and make good torque doesn't make them the best for spool. A wide LSA with low duration means poor cylinder filling. You aren't pushing out the optimum amount of exhaust at low RPMs. You're pushing out enough to make a good balance between torque and economy. I'm sure some of the cam experts could tell you exactly which valve events help with spool and why.

Until then, a quick Google search comes up with results like this. http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/ctrp_1106_turbo_camshaft_guide/

I assumed my ls6 cam PT88 combo would stop pulling by 6000-6500 rpm but that simply was not the case.

I'd believe I was well past peak but with the boost I was feeding it didn't seem to nose over or quit pulling hard. By the end I was shifting at 6800 & crossing at 6500

I'm sure a cam spec'd for the combo could have done better, Im just saying I was super impressed with what I was able to accomplish with the "stock LS6 cam."

Interesting article. Basically says (at least Duttweiler) to cam it like a n/a engine with todays more efficient turbos.

I just converted back to turbo from N/A. I left my huuuuge! N/A cam in it and it overachieves for the amount of boost im running so there is something to be said for that.

also, in my experience, a nice sized cam is better everywhere over the stock cam, but it does not mean you cannot run the same times with the stock cam. all it means is that
1. you will need a few psi more boost to achieve the same result
2. the stock cam is done at 6200 rpms so better have a super effecient converter that will lock up at such low rpms.

Not really. Very few setups I've ever seen (even with todays efficient turbos) are able to keep a 1:1 or better pressure ratio. There are a few....but it's not common. I would not cam most street turbo setups with a high overlap/duration NA type performance cam.

What does that have to do with spooling ability? Did you have upgraded springs? I've seen over 700ftlb by 4k and peak power at 5600 on a JY lm7 with springs only.

Not saying a custom aftermarket cam couldn't make more power at higher rpm, or even spool better. Also not saying an LM7 cam is the way to go. In general I would say small duration/overlap cams will spool more quickly on a typical mild turbo setup. IMO most builds tend to over cam the motor.

Dont' think so... Never quoted him. Hes talking about a 6.0 cam, not an LM7 cam. My post was directed at you. 5200 seems low. Like I said others have gotten more out of it.
