Default s475, is the race cover worth it?

thinking the 475 will be the turbo for me, 96 turbine, 1.32ar, t6. going on a 5.3, tu1 or tu2 cam, hotside built by me, in an s10 with th400 and 9inch. I searched, but couldn't find much discussion on the standard vs. the race cover. a lot of pics here show people using the race cover. is it really 75-100 hp upgrade like forced inductions says? and is it worth the 389 upcharge? thanks for any help guys

I am interested in this also. I was thinking about talking to Jose about billet 476r, 92mm turbine, 1.25 ar t4 on a 6.0 lq4 with t56. The turbo I am looking at is pretty spendy in t4 platform with the billet wheel. I am really wondering if the race cover is worth all that extra $.

By the way chevyrules85, your setup is really going to haul in a S-10!

I as well am interested in this very same turbo, except on a 1.10 A/R cuz i dont think the 1.32 will ever spool in my light weight car w/ a 6 speed. I messaged DrTurbo inquiring about it, but havnt received a response yet.

^^Keep us posted. Agreed the 1.32 is a bit large for a 6-speed and the lighter chassis. Ia m in the same boat.

at lower psi levels its not worth the 75-100hp...but I would think the newer billet v3 wheels would gain more then the cast wheels at both lower and higher pressure ratios

Depends on the setup and power goal. Unless your maxing the turbo out and running it on the ragged edge the cover upgrade won't give you 75-100hp. Most OE shortblock setups don't need a race cover IMHO. The $ per HP gained isn't there.

I want the race cover mainly because it has a 3" slip discharge. The regular S400 4" v band discharge is going to be rather janky looking seeing how im going to have to reduce it right away to 3" to fit my intercooler piping. As much money as i have into my car, im not too worried about the HP to $ factor anymore, lol. Plus it looks alot cooler!

Nothing wrong with that! If money wan't an issues I'd be all over it. I ground my S475 standard cover outlet down. I use a 3.5 to 3" coupler.

i Saw your post where you did that mod, looks good! Soo after filing down the V-band flange, the silicone coupler ID you used was 3.5" and not 4"?

On your setup not really. You'll be good with the normal cover.

Don't quote me on that, but I'm pretty sure. I did say 3.0 to 3.5 in my old post. I had the coupler laying around in a bin from my buick days. Maybe 3.75?, def not 4.

When you grind it down 3.5" inner diameter silicon coupler will fit it perfectly. I just shaved down my v band on mine this past weekend. I left an 1/8" bump so the coupler won't pop off

saweeet! thanks for the good info. Maybe il do a Billet S475 instead of a Cast S475 w/ race cover. Going from 3.5" to 3" might just be A-okay with me afterall.

Anyone got a photo showing the two covers?
For the Vband outlet, if you go that way, RPS has it. It's an oring deal and converts right to 3". But you have to weld the 3" pipe to it. A 3" silicone coupler would be much easier and not require such critical alignment in the piping. I just didn't want to hack on my spendy turbo.

Don't be scared. It's only a $650 turbo I just used a 4.5" cutoff wheel and grinder on mine. Took 15 min

so if I did not get the race cover, what size is the outlet? if its a 4 inch v band, couldn't I just put a 6 inch piece of pipe there with a vband, and reduce it down to 3inch after that? thanks guys.

http://www.racepartsolutions.com/index.php/categories1/part/turbo-accessories/garrett-borg-warner-mild-steel-compressor-outlet-flange-race-part-solutions

It's 3.5" flange. This reduces to 3".
I just built this a few weeks ago.

My turbo is the S476 billet. It wasn't $650....

Thank you for the photos!

Ron
