Default Overheating..suggestions?

well, i have been hearing that the ATI fan is a POS, but didn't want to believe it (drove the car home in stop and go traffic for 1.5 hours in 80 degrees and it was fine)...but today i had some serious overheating issues.

Went to the mall 15 minutes away, and by the time i got there (had to stop at maybe 5 lights total) the engine temp was getting to be unsafe...same for the return trip...while driving it was fine ~210...but as soon as a light came...up the temps went like crazy.

it was about ~92 degrees out today...

what are my options?
-160 thermostat
-Spal Fan (where can i find them?)
-water wetter
-heavy duty coolant
-somene suggested a product called "Blue Ice" (apparently really helps engine temps)

any ideas? Thanks very much.

Spal fan solved my problems and I live in Florida. The fan is loud. Start calling some sponsors, I forgot where I purchased mine from. Its a direct bolt in, very easy.

cool, maybe i'll just do:
Thermostat
Fan
Purple Ice coolant

If anyone knows a sponsor that sells Spal, let me know...thanks!

I dont know holw old your ATI kit is but I bought this one early Feb and it has what looks like the big curved blade spal fan. Its definately not the POS mr gasket fan that came with my first kit - this one is pretty loud and almost kills the engine when it turns on. I havent had any heating issues in 90 degree weather but I have the a/c off the car so that may be the reason and not the newer style fan..

its one of the newer 8 rib kits...maybe a fan control switch would work?

na, once the fan is on if they cant keep the temp down its not enough.

I assume you have had the fans programmed to come on earlier then stock, stock they come on at like 229 degrees and the second stage kicks on at 237.

Also make sure the fan is turning the right way, its easy to get the wires crossed and have it blow towards the front of the car - seen it happen a few times and on hot days it really shows.

Well I have one of the new Prochargers and sitting at a light will get up to 200 - 210 This is even with a 160 and the fans coming on @ 180. Before it would be 180 when I was cruising
IAT's are 100- 125

What I don't understand is when I get on the highway, it takes a long time to cool down. When before the temps would drop almost right away. It is because the ATI shroud blocks half the radiator??

actually, i don't have the fan temps set lower...can that be done with A-tap bi-directional or will i need LS1edit/Hpp3 etc...?

i'll check the fan to make sure its blowing towards the rear of the car.
Thanks for the help.

You will need some type of programmer like EDIT or Hypertech. Autotap and EFI won't help.

I have the same problem with my car, it get's hot if I try to run the A/C on a hot day. I E-Mailed ATI to ask them about the fan and they said the ATI stocker is a Spal fan. Are there any markings on the fan to be sure?

Here's their (ATIs) answer:

First thing to check is to make sure the fan is spinning the
correct direction. There has been many occurrences of fans that are
wired backwards, and offer a lower percent of cooling ability. The fan
units are a SPAL, and rated at 3000 CFM. That is 400 CFM more then the
stock twin fans. The Spal unit should have no issues cooling your car,
during hot weather. I would check to make sure the thermostat is
functioning correctly, as well as the fan relay. The Spal fan can be
replaced for $150 via our parts department.

I don't belive that my fan is a 3000 CFM unit. What about the rest of you?

Mine looks like the bigger Spal from pics I have seen and is way diferent then the weak mr gasket fan I got with the first kit - this one really moves a lot of air. On a 90 degree day I seldom get over 210 and (thats on the scanmaster, not stock gauge) and thats acceptable - but like I said I have no a/c..

That 160 thermo is a no-brainer. If you don't want to tune, I think SLP sells an adjustable fan switch that will fit your bill. Springing for tuning software would be your best bet though.

The key to the fan working right is their seal to that rad. If the fan can draw air from around the sides of the shroud, it will. Throw some duct tape between the shroud and the rad and that should help a little too.

The biggest gap is on the top of the rad, I used foam weatherstrip on the bottom and sides of the shroud and duct tape across the top ouder the shroud. Dont know how much difference it makes but the more air you can pull through the radiator the better.

stock fans are 3500cfm. That ATI guy is full of ****

Seal the fan to the rad with black duct tape. Also 160 stat with programming will help a GREAT deal. Also you can wire the fans (I can't remember exactly how now) to get more voltage to the fan (fan runs faster)

good luck,
Chris

well, thanks for the opinions guys! Although i think i found the problem!

I let my brother wire up the fan, since i figured he could handle it...and apparently i was wrong. The car got hot again, and the fan NEVER came on. I'm guessing it's a loose wire somewhere.

I thought it was kind of odd after the car being fine in traffic, that it should crap out for no reason!

I'll still pick up a tstat asap, and have it tuned for the fans to come on earlier!

What do you guys suggest the fan setting should be? I'm having the asame problems. I got the 160 thermo, 2 bottles of water wetter, and fans are going inthe right direction. Even added a 12 inch pusher on the front. The only thing is I took out the shrouds in frony of the radiator and I'm running a 383 if that makes any difference.
