3rd vs 4th Gen Rods

Look for the LC9 motors. They are alum block/243 head/gen4 rods etc.. Picked my 2008 LC9 up with the harness for $500. You have to remove the DOD BS and possibly the variable valve timing. Most do away with that stuff when they buy a cam anyway. Don't discredit the 4.8's either. Noone wants them so they are usually cheap. Picked up an 06 for $600 as a spare.
I wouldn't let the absence of a 243 head effect your decision too much. From what I've seen lately you can make 700+ on the "crappy" truck 862's pretty easy. 317s are a good cheap alternative as well. I could have sold my 243's and they would have paid for my whole motor!

I see this from time to time. I've heard of 3 LS2 engines breaking rods below 1000 HP. At the same time I've seen 3 different engines hit 1300 HP on gen 4 rods over and over and over and repeatedly beat on them without failures. It could've been heat related or excess low-end torque that did yours in.

Anyone know how much shipping is for a complete engine, lets say iron block? I'm sure somewhere out there is willing to ship.
By the way, here is yet another L33 pushing the bar. ~1250 HP on stock bottom end. Later on it eventually made 1412 HP @ 7800 RPM with stock block/rods/crank and aftermarket pistons on methanol.

I need to move out of Ohio I guess. According to car-part.com, the closest LC9s are both 30 miles away and they want $3400 each.

I already have an L33 for my Nova. Now I'm looking for something to pick up on the cheap to use in another build. 300 bucks is a lot cheaper than $1000.

Maybe it wasn't an LC9 as I was told. Not like the badging is stamped on the block. Was an 08 alum 5.3 anyway. DOD only.
Yes It had the DOD lifters. I used the lifters from my spar 4.8. Your L33 trumps all attitude makes no sense. IMO your better off with a newer engine. If you can get one cheaper it's a no brainer.

It has its benefits. Aluminum block 5.3, Gen 4 pistons/rods with Gen 3 electronics. No DoD/AFM. 799/243 heads and flat top pistons. Its a good combo out of the box.
However, a fourth gen 5.3 with aluminum block is just as good once the AFM/DoD is gone.

I guess indiana has some good prices.
Buddy got two older 4.8s complete with harness no pcm for 500 at the pick n pull.
Got a newer iron 5.3 a few days later for 280 out the door.
Yeah you have to pull it yourself but they are a 1/4 of the cost.
Doesn't matter what year or size the motor is it's dirt cheap everyday haha.

I pulled one of my rod/pistons out, looks like the gen 4-the rod end is bushed, wrist pin is pressed in the piston
if I can save the block's standard bore, I will reuse everything-I wanted to change the rod bolts, but the stock bolts have those sleeves in the rod cap
do new bolts not use the sleeves-the sleeve kind of stops the stock bolts from coming out

yeah you just tug 'em out, but really, seriously just reuse the stock gen 4 bolts unless you're spinning it over 7k
I put arps in a motor what that was the cool thing to do. come to find out its a total waste of money. I should put the stock ones back in and sell the arps lol

hey I got a good one for you guys.
I have access to a "2004 5.3" (all the info I can glean from the guy)
It has the black crank sensor and the larger 13mm valley cover bolts.
What are the chances it has a 24x reluctor and gen 4 rods?
I snagged a six liter like that but it was from an '05 truck.
