Default L33 Failure, Suggestions

Having a hell of a time with this car this year. After boost spiking on the stock LS1 and bending/twisting a rod I had a L33 installed. Well after under ~400 total miles on pump gas 11psi (7475) tune, my converter took a dump. While having the converter replaced and trans freshened up we decided to just do an oil change and install my PT88. Specks in oil led to oil pan pulled which led to a diagnosis of chewed rod bearings.

Don't want to start into what caused argument. Motor is hurt and I don't know which direction to do now. My "budget build" has ballooned out of control. I don't want to upgrade turbos AGAIN and just want to run the PT88. I have 317 heads and Tick Stage 2 turbo cam in the motor as of now. Should I bore it a bit and drop in pistons/rods and keep stock crank? Not looking for 1000+whp build. Just want to be able to have fun with the car. Only got 4 races in with the thing all summer.

I guess I need to be more clear: no I wont be discussing the how/why/what.

I am just looking for suggestions about utilizing the pt88 and a broken L33 onto next steps.

I would want to know what caused the failure before I put another motor in. I'd just put a junkyard in it and boost the crap out of it.

Not being an *** but what do you want to know exactly?? Your asking about the l33 and looking for directions to go from there? Many people have been fine with these motors and the stock LS1 in the 700-800whp range. It's all dependent on a good tune though.

If your just asking what to do with it, I'd buy another JY motor and do it all over again. That would be the cheapest route.

If it was me I would buy a low milage jy 6.0 and go that route. Or bore what you got and Put good rods and pistons in it. 6.0 option would be cheaper and make great power with that pt88. Either way it sucks man I know, but just know that whatever you do it will better than b4

an l33 is a nice piece. if it were mine id pull the l33 apart and fix it. change a rod or two if it spun the bearings. have the crank turned check the ring gaps clean it all up and get it back together but this time you know what you have.

a few hundred bucks and its fresh.

do another jy 5.3 or 4.8.picked up one 5.3 for 300 and another spare for 180. swap one in and DONT do what you did on the last one to the new one. I ve put 3000 miles on mine at 15psi. factory motors are good ****

What about replacing bearings, boring it a bit, forged pistons but keep the gen IV rods? Just not sure if I need to swap rods.

Gen 4 rods are nice until you need to resize the big end. At that point, aftermarket rods make better sense.
Prob best to disassemble the L33 and see exactly what it needs before deciding.

Being from Portland/Vanc area, I know these engines aren't falling out of trees like they are on the east coast.

Hi Ron glad you could chime in. I dont think people understand they arent a 'cheap' motor here. $1200-1500 is going rate for an L33 from a junkyard around here

Jesus that's a lot of money. I would absolutely rebuild what you have with good parts then.

just buy a junk yard engine , ls9 headgaskets , headstuds , turbo cam , and run it the way it is . Many people doing this making 700 horses.

If a replacement motor is 1200-1500.... Id throw some wiseco pistons and callies compstar rods in the motor you got for roughly the same money and go make 950 to the tire with the thing.

Callies Compstars would be the suggested rod choice then? Because that was the direction I was headed.

Note the motor I had that munched bearings had a Tick Turbo cam, LS9 gaskets, head studs, blah blah blah. And 317 heads. So it was already WELL set-up.

I've never seen these motors that cheap in the midwest either. Guys that get the great deals sometimes get lucky or go pull themselves. in the midwest, i've paid 450 for a 4.8 and 1100 for a l33. A lot more than most guys I'm sure, everyone on here is getting these for free LOL.

Comstar rods.... the 3.80 bore wiseco pistons with the 3805HF ring set and 8 S718 wrist pins....

Brian Tooley Racing ( who is a board sponsor) has all of the parts in stock.

A sound plan in my book.
I kind of wish I'd have done this up front in mine!

Good luck Jon.
