Default E85 fuel filter report

I've always run a Wix 33107 spin on diesel fuel filter on my car. It's a 10 micron paper element the size of a typical older spin on oil filter. Flow rate is 12-15 gpm or
700-900 gph.

I just used the one that was on the car for the last few years.

I replaced it today after 4 months on the corn. Cut it apart and it was spotless. Not even any fuel cell foam bits in it. No degradation of the rubber parts, or the glue that holds the paper element to the end caps. They cost less than $5.

I use the same one on my oil furnace.....

Just FYI for those who might want a much cheaper alternative to the high dollar SS cleanable filters.

Ron

I used the magnafuel filters and had the same luck. I think the problem comes into your location for the quality of the e85. I've had e85 from GA, SC, and VA. No problem with the fuel lines or the filters. Definitely a nice alternative to the pricey filters

X2 for golden rod I've used them on 4 cars now over the last 6 years. Never had an issue with E85. (just don't get the moisture absorbing filters by mistake)

Here is mine after a year of use.

The Assy. is $30 at tractor supply. Filter is $12-15 10 micron

I also just found this comment on a website when I was looking for a pic of the filter. So maybe these aren't the best filters filtration wise. Maybe we can search around and find something better. Do you know what the absolute filtration rating is on that filter you use Ron?

Be advised that this filter only has a 30 micron "absolute" and 10 micron "nominal" rating! This means that dirt particles as big as 10 microns will only be removed from your fuel 50% of the time.

Same filtration as the golden rod filter then. I’ll search around the diesel forums and see if I can find something that has a 10 micron “absolute” filtration rate. Bet the flow is halved if I find one... Still good enough for most of our needs I'd guess.

Guess it is close to time to pull mine and see what it looks like. It is a little more expensive one. This would have been a good alternative.

Oh also in the diesel world we used CAT spin on filters. Cheap and extremely good filters.

Looks like WIX 33910 and 33960 are nominal 4 micron rated. That would be plenty for us. Not exactly cheap..

I also kept ran into alot of people suggesting CAT filters being mentioned. But I found nothing that stated exact filtration specs on specific PN's.

Also wanted to point out that the SS filters most run filter no where near as good as even the paper 10 micron nominal rating from what I've read.

From what I read the cat filters were 99.7% effective at 10 microns compared to the 70% for ac delco and Wix filters. Just what I remember from my diesel days.

Been using stock fuel filters with e85 for 3 years without an issue. Change them once a year and they always look clean inside.

I think flow VS filtration is the big issue. I used the paper wix replacement stock filters on my daily with E85 for years as well at lowish power levels. Split the filters yearly and never saw a problem. I'd be a little worried about the OEM filter on a "performance" fuel system though. I'd have to guess the stock filter isn't rated flow wise for big power or pressure. (I have no idea what they flow) Some of the Turbo Buick crowd would run 2 stock filters in parallel for this reason. You'd need a pressure transducer on both sides to see what was really going on. I'm pretty sure there is no pressure drop on the 700+GPH filters.
