They weld just fine if you preheat and let cool slowly.

It's not cast iron, it's cast steel. You don't need to preheat or use high nickle content wire. (When welding mild steel anyway)

This is the truck I'm looking to put a turbo in. 5.3, 4L60 soon to be Turbo 400, 12 bolt with 390s in it, Caltracs, Caltracs Shocks front and rear. Rear is narrowed a little, 295/55/15 Drag Radial. Gonna sell the torque thrusts and put my blacked out billet spealities street lites on it. Not going for show, I like the dings and dents HA.

Are they 100% cast steel? I thought there was a Decent amount of iron in them. If that is the case nickel is the way to go.

nice truck! heres mine. I have the wheels you are planning to get in 17s.

good luck on the turbo swap, its a lot of work making everything fit around the narrow frame and steering junk, but its worth it. my truck is retarded fun around town. That dirty dingo thing looks like might fit an s10, if the forward facing stuff will fit. mine had to be built at a funny angle to fit it all in there.

Very cool. Thanks for the pics. Even without the turbo its stupid fun to drive. Looks like I'm headed to Home Depot. Told my buddy who makes foam pillars and props to make me some foam 2x4s and 2x6s to stick out the back of the bed. Sleeper Street Truck.

If you're really interested in the log setup, KB Racing has some pretty trick stuff too and will probably out-flow that DD log.

Check out the pics starting in post #3. On our S10 Blazer build, we used a stock truck manifold on the drivers side and made the log on the pass side. Really wasn't that hard at all.

You really shouldn't combine / use mild steel with stainless steel as they're dissimilar metals & have different expansion - contraction rates from each other. Your gonna find the mild steel flanges are gonna warp something fierce!
I kept band-aiding a customers manifolds that another shop in my area built that looked like a novice amateur built in their backyard (no offence to all the novice amateurs that are building stuff in the backyard) and every month the customer was blowing gaskets and complaining of leaks. It's a big no no in metallurgy.

Columbia River for most of it. Pipe/flex/v-bands.

Squeeze performance has some very nice prices on v-bands, especially with the sloppy discount .

I disagree with you in a sense. I don't think the dissimilar expansion rates are a big deal since the whole flange is one material and all of the tube is another. if i mixed in mild steel tubing I would completely agree. I used different filler (309L) for the flange/tube joints than i did for the tube/tube joints (308L) in order to mitigate any cracking issues between the metals. Plus we are blessed with two bolts per tube, and no siamesed tubes like a sbc, which helps hold things in place also. So far it has held up very well.

What thickness was the flange you had problems with? I made sure to use a 1/2" flange to help with the warpage/leakage. 3/8" is the absolute thinnest I would consider, and with the heat of a turbo, I would have a hard time justifying the few dollars saved over 1/2"

columbia river bends. eveything and anything u need for bends n metal.
header flanges u can get anywhere.
you can build your own out of tubular header. instead of a log.
even the stock manifold is abetter design than a log. i dont build logs anymore.

Everyone has been a great help. I will post some pics. Looks like a good project. I have one more question. I see some turbos with mounts to the block or chassis and others mounted by themselves with a flex pipe. Should I use the flex Joint or just solid it to the chassis and use solid motor mounts. I can also do a motor plate.
I knew a guy who bought those ebay headers and mounted a turbo right to the end, it cracked the header all over

Which ever way you want to do it will work. I'm doing solid mounts and chassis mount.

edit: I'm also running a T6 S478 which is heavy as hell.
