I assume you went with the LS3 due to the weight savings over an iron block ? I know they say you can run an alum to X hp, but are you concerned with the core shift with that block and the thinner walls ?

If I weren't so far away I'd help ya in a heart beat. I'm by no meant a pro and my TIG isn't the prettiest but I get good penetration (giggity?) and have not had a weld pop yet.

Personally, I'd run 1 7/8" into 3" cats and y with 3.5" out. As yours is NOT a max effort but an effort to maintain civility I'd steer away from the 2" primaries and dual 3" out. Would you gain power? Absolutely but at what cost? Dual 3" in theory supports about 800bhp without an flow restriction. No flow restriction equals loud.

For a catback I personally like single 3.5" or dual 2.5" which have almost the same internal area. The stock CTS-V is dual 2.5" and many have pulled some awesome numbers on the near stock exhaust.

Having built a motor or two myself, assuming all your bearing look great, the rods simply could not handle the pressure. Whether it was ignition timing events being too early or just too much pressure, they weren't up to the task.

Sorry to hear she gave up the ghost man...

P.S. his block will be fine for anything upto an F-1a I'd think. A D1SC for sure. I mean he was rocking a maxed out D1SC and his Gen III block held just fine.

Yeah, there are a couple options for the chinese made 1 7/8" that I've considered. Money saved on exhaust goes towards upgrading the blower.

Yes, once I have some progress I'll put together some pics, vids, etc, and spell out what happened and what I'm going to do.

If Kooks TD 3" system is not an option, too loud ( which it will be) or money better spent somewhere else ..... You may want to look at the Bassani dual system. It's a 2.5" system with an interesting axle back & xpipe as well. The price is right for one of the very few over the axles TD systems. I would personally extinguish all options for TD system before going with a ypipe. There is a real benefit to using an xpipe. Just as a good pair of headers uses a collector to create a scavenging effect (bournorli effect) the xpipe does the same. While our FI systems push the exhaust out .... The extra scavenging actually makes that easier as it pulls the exhaust as well. The added benefit for me is that the exhaust pulses are blended to a degree. This smooths out the tone & reduces rasp ( exhaust sound is one of those " to each his own" categories). For me the more rounded howl from an xpipe sound is worth the trouble.
The negatives:
You will need to fabricate a connection from your headers to the system. Unfortunately there are very few sound clips to find on youtube and clearance is questionable. All in all it's worth looking into.

How far are you from Mufflex? I had them build me a custom exhaust; 3" y-pipe to a 3.5" catback into a Magnaflow Race Series muffler. Sounds killer and I built it like to be able to 'grow' into a FI setup. I know they sell kits but with the piping being that big I wanted them to actually build it to fit my car. I've been meaning to get a new video for years but I'm lazy and rarely drive the car. I have a track rental next week, I'll try and get some video. The y-pipe has since been ceramic coated, if I ever have to drop the rear again I'll get the rest of the catback done also.

Maybe I can talk to Kooks about using a different pair of mufflers that can help quiet the exhaust a little.

I tried that, Chris is a great guy and was more than willing to swap out mufflers. The dilemma is that very few options will fit. I was inquiring about their oval muffler. It seemed to me that it would fit. It's the muffler the muffler that they use in the 2010 Camaro etc.. Chris was apprehensive & concerned about fitment . In my opinion the ovals would tone things down a bit. Truth of that matter is the systems with cats ( not for us) are more tame for a street car. We may have to relocate to the use of a resonator. The issue is where to put them ??? We have zero room under an Fbody for a resonator let alone a TD system. I did come across an old thread ( 2005) where someone mounted resonators just before the axels, just before the rise from horizontal to vertical. They had to take the BFH to the rear passenger seat well. This made room for two small resonators in that location. This guy also mounted Ovals in the rear ( very similar to Kooks ovals). Coincidentally this was done at the original Kooks shop. It was probably the prototype of the system that we see today.

That's the kind of mufflers I'm talking about. Something that actually will quiet it down a little.

I have the Mufflex 4" with single magnaflow muffler. Flows great and sounds good with no rasp, but a bit on the loud side. WOT sound is amazing.

Fab 9 rear-end pretty much rules out 3" true duals over the the rear as there was barely room for the 4".

I vote against the kooks duals. I have their 1 3/4 on a stock motor running the d1 and the car is wayyy to loud for norml street driving. To be honest, I'm not happy at all and am currently looking at options to change it or sell the setup for a y and magnaflow.
Sorry to hear, but can't wait to see the build.
