Default Scavenger pump question

Running on on3 scavanger pump on my turbo set up and it's def not the quietest thing lol. Was wondering if there was maybe another pump people were running that wasn't so loud or if they are all like that

Is it isolated well with rubber?

Try the Turbowerx Mini.

Yeah they are loud for sure. Mine is isolated and you can definitely hear it, but seems to be working well and can't hear it over the exhaust.

You might be able to PWM the pump and slow it down. Slowing pump down would quiet it down.

I wonder how the Turbowerk mini holds up on a larger frame turbo like a T4 or T6. They only flow something like 1 GPM, where their base model flows like 3 GPM. If the mini could do the job, I would buy that today. Maybe with a small enough restriction orifice on the oil inlet, the lower flowing scavange pump could evacuate the oil delivered through the small orifice and still be adequate for proper lubrication.

The mini claims 2 GPM. I see no reason why it wouldn't work for you. Not an expert, though.

I was gonna try and wrap in some rubber, mount it again and see if it quiets down. I just did a dry fit yesterday, maybe it will quiet down once it gets some oil circulating through it. Thanks for the input guys, I'm hoping to have this turbo project down here soon

Show us how you have it isolated.

Just took some thin rubber wrap that we use at work and wrapped it around it a few times. I'll try to snap a few pics tonight when I get home.

It might cavitate and make more sound when dry or on cold start up, but quiet down some with oil flow also. Instead of wrapping it (which might overheat it) use little rubber feet for standoffs.

Pumps loud, no way around that. Soft Rubber isolators (can be found on ebay cheap) will help a lot. My fuel pump is a monster and is just as loud as the scavenge pumps. This setup cut the noise in half. If you rubber wrap the pump and hose clamp it to an L bracket mounted with isolators it will be as quiet as it’s gonna get.

Turbowerx Exa is pretty quiet. Seems all the others must be terrible though ?

I did this for another user who queried the noise

First is a heat gun to give you some sort of reference as to noise levels picked up. The exa can clearly be seen directly in front of the camera just closer than I held the heat gun.

First loud noise is fuel circulating, the camera was right beside the FPR. I've the Exa on a short delay timer

When I did the video, the car or ignition hadnt been turned on for about 2 months

I have one of the on3 pumps. It is loud and annoying when cold. I can start the car up and let the engine warm up and the pump is still making noise. Once i drive a ways and come to a stop i will no longer hear the pump. I'm guessing the pump needs to warm up and get enough oil flow through it.

It seems just when the car sits for a long time and i start it up the pump will be annoyingly loud for a bit but always quiets down.

Where are you all mounting the pump? I've got mine in the stock horn location with a bracket but it seems like it's too high for the drain line to properly drain down to the pump. I don't want the pump to sit higher then the drain/feed tube to it, it should gravity drain to it right?

The Exa can be mounted almost anywhere, in any position.

The cheaper pumps must all be mounted upright, and fairly sure they need to be relatively close to source

I just didn't know with the pump on of it would pull enough to compensate for it not being able to gravity drain down to it. Maybe I'm over thinking this lol

Again, cant comment on the other pumps, but the Exa can be mounted high with no issues, as mine is

I run the Turbowerx mini with twin BB turbos, I believe it's fairly quite. But mine is in a 5th Gen camaro or land yacht for short.
Mine is is mounted a on the same plain as the drains but have used them above drains without issue.

I'm sure if the pump is at or below the oil source it will maintain prime better. My EXA will cavitate a little but once the oil warms up it's fine. In my setup the pump is slightly higher than the turbo drains.

IMO for any scavenge pump setup to work as it should, there needs to be a sump and a check valve. Some don’t use these things and get away with it. That doesn’t make it correct. There are other “work-arounds” to this as well.

A vented sump will relieve some stress on the pump (quieter) and ensure there is no suction on the turbo drain. When you shut the engine/pump down, the turbo continues to drain oil. By having a check valve on the pump exit and a large enough sump to accommodate that volume of oil, it allows that oil to drain into/fill the sump. This means the sump will be full of oil for the next startup. Which will keep the pump gears lubricated and quiet. Running the gears dry is the source of wear and noise. Any vacuum created in the system will cause the pump to work harder… also leading to more noise. You never want to “suck” oil from the turbo. It should be gravity drained to a vented sump and pumped out.
