Ball Bearing Turbo Allowable Shaft Play?
I just purchased a used 7875 Turbonetics ball Bearing Turbo and it seems like there is alot more play than my last Comp Turbo brand BB turbo.
I measured it with a dial indicator on a big flat slab of granite in our machine shop at work and these are the results:
Radial play (side to side) = 0.016 inch total, so about 0.008 inch side to side from center
Axial Play (in and out/thrust) = 0.005 inch total
Obviously oil is drained and I know the oil creates a hydrodynamic film between the rollers and race on the BB when its running, so the play will be more when drained for a while.
What do you think? It has around 2K miles and worked great for the original owner he said.

I used to run a Garrett GT4094R(ball bearing) secondary charger on my diesel. I noticed some in and out play at one point and asked about it. I was told .005 was normal. It was exactly .005 and when checked a year and a half later, it was still the same. Sounds about right from what i was told.
