Default V BOX users step in.

Looking for a quick and dirty way to log 40-140, 90-130...ect runs without shelling out the $$$ for a V box. Found this, looks interesting. Anyone use it? Anyone with a V-box want to download it to compare accuracy?

There are many such apps, only issue is the GPS on phones is less accurate than the likes of a Vbox largely because of a slower update rate.

If you have a good undriven wheel speed source, or you have good traction via the OEM speedo readings, then no reason why you cant log speeds via the ecu if you have it calibrated correctly.
Whether that's via HPT, EFILive or some sort of OBD app, doesnt matter. Again the faster the update rate the better

No WheelSSs' on the 90 Rx7, and no speed sensor in the trans (there was no plug in my hack harness!!) so that's not an option currently.

And, traction is an issue! It will stick with slicks on the track, but with the boost up it's a battle.

The vbox GPS engine is 20hz as well as accelerometers It is stupid how close it is for me on the box vs the track

I use one a ton for rolling incrementals

Its cheap for what you get

Use one once and you are hooked, it isn't as easy as people think to put down big power with rwd on the street

Most VBox's are only 10Hz, some of the more expensive or the newer VBox Sport are 20Hz ( or at least the option can be purchased )

But the basic screen mount grey boxes are 10Hz

Most phones are likely only 1 or 2Hz at best

Yeah I use the sport box. It is slick and can be used about anywhere. Just turn it on and it is self powered and will log whenever moving. Get done take home and pull up the info on a laptop. It will also interface with an iPhone on Bluetooth

Like here is a sample of raw data. You can pick what you want to view. You can view anything though. Distance, speed, mph, lateral and longitudinal G, elevation, lat/long, ect

Then here are the type of reports you can get

Or just load your file onto the site and it will give you a report for anything.

VBox sport is worth every penny, phone won't log worth a ****. 5hz is about the slowest rate that is useful, it still won't give perfectly accurate 10mph intervals if your car is fast at all. The cheapest decent logger is Qstarz BT-Q1300S for $100 on Amazon, even comes with decent software, only 5hz though.

It's too bad not many have them because it is alot of fun.

I thought they where a joke until a friend with a ttg made me try it, hooked. To have something like a 60-130 street list from a large group of rwd stuff would be competitive

Thing is it can't be cheated, list master can see exactly what road the file took place on so no cheating with the track

I know I am prouder of my street intervals than I am my 1/4 mile track passes

Everybody's too busy being a hard *** and worried about being accused of "roll racing"

I just picked up the Qstarz datalogger/GPS reciever box. Found one for $75 shipped. Blue tooth ready, 10 hz GPS signal, and looks to have some pretty capable "track" software. I was not picking this up for a V-box substitute. I wanted it for the Speed output signal for boost control/Speedo purposes. It might work out well for a cheaper vbox substitute though? I haven't even taken it out of the box yet.

Some of the other models look more impressive...

I had that one before my Vbox, I also had the 5hz one I listed. That one you have is very accurate and great data, but two things were annoying to me, it doesn't log on its own, so you have to either run a USB cord or do the blue tooth thing. The blue tooth thing works but I always had to repair my laptop with it and it was a pain. The software also sucked with the one I got, I wrote a .net exe to do Vbox style grid data and it was a lot more usable for interval stuff.

The Qstarz stuff is great for the money.

Main thing that put me off the VBox sport, was the fact most connectivity seemed to be related to icrap stuff, with no solid support for anything Android, only 3rd party app's that may work.

I ended up buying the VBox Mini, partly because of the VBox Tools....which is apparently superb software...that I havent a ******* clue how to use LOL.

There is a new VBox Test Suite, which for most straight line stuff is a lot more straightforward, and it will also accommodate the 1foot rollout easily, which seems to be an issue with runs logged then reviewed on either Performance Tools or VBox Tools

Yeah I am android too. All I ever do is just take the card in the house and load the files onto vboxtools.com

I'd have liked the 20Hz, but I wanted something I can view data in real time in the car without other displays, phones etc as well as analysis afterwards on the computer.

Ended up picking the VBox Mini as it also has a yaw sensor, not that I drift a lot, but adds some info when doing some other racing too.

Apparently you can use the VBox tools to generate power/torque graphs too, but it'll probably be 5 years before I figure that one out

Lol. All I know is they are addicting. I burned way to much gas last year because of it. I went through a fresh set of DRs in two weeks and not trying to let them spin

Yeah very addicting and I find myself comparing my times to weird **** "hmmm, exactly as fast as a Veyron SS in Road and Track, 60-150, somethings wrong..."

Ha you should post your files over on norotors. We have a 60-130 list over there. Doesn't have to be street either

This is great info-thanks Rotary. That data is very useful, and just want I am looking for to see if the changes I make is helping me win the traction battle.

What are the real pros/cons of the Vbox sport vs. the Qstarz? It seems more road race guys use the Qstarz, and the drag race/mile racers use the VBox, but on paper I don’t see what is warranting an extra $300 for the Vbox.
