Oil volume...Makes one wonder why GM has the new 5.3 truck engine, [my 2014 Silve], at 8+ qts!
My system is set up to log oil psi.. A good idea when chasing brg issues.
Or, just to keep an eye on engine condition, in general.

Small correction in my setup. It was a new stock ls6 oil pump that is balanced and blueprinted from tick and it's just Ported on inlet and outlet. Says standard volume and I said it was a high volume. Not sure if there is a difference from being ported to a high volume. I'm sure it flows more tho anyway. Also I picked up 7 qts of Mobil 1 10/30 and a k&n filter. Also I said screw it and purchased prolong additive just cause. Hell if a $17 bottle of it helps in anyway from blowing another motor it's worth the money. If not it's only $17. Lol

I read up on it a little and and supposably the k&n flows better than standard ac delco. Not sure about Napa ones but I like the 1" nut on the bottom of the k&n. Hopefully it's ok. I have a stock oil pressure sender that I'm gonna datalog with like denmah did.

Warm like 15 min of driving and beartng on it a little. is like 32ish at 850 idle. 60+ on a nice 2nd gear roll on. To say 6k. Cold start up like 70-80degrees is 50-60 idle at 1k rpm What's yours ?

Not near as good as that!!! After a real long driv maybe like 20 at an idle and if you get After it real good it goes up to around 55ish. But that's with a stock oil pump, I didn't touch the short block on this one.

Yup, I'm not to worried about it. Seems like a lot that's what a lot of my previous race motors ran for pressure. Just shaking it down now trying to establish some good base readings for pressure and temp so when there is a problem I'll know.

Changed oil and for around 100miles the oil was fairly dirty. No metal flakes tho which is good. So I added 6.5 qts of Mobil 1 10w/30 and and bottle of prolong and k&n filter. Took it around the block not really beating on it hard cause when it was up to tempature oil pressure is around 60-70 cruising at like 2000-2500 rpm. When I boosted it it went up to 80-90.probly just from new oil. And when I finally got back home and left it idle I had 40-45 psi. Think I'm good so I'll have to head to Dyno soon.

For a cam bearing to spin, it would have to fuse against the cam right? And that would indicate a lack of oiling correct? How else can you spin something that is not suppose to be in contact with anything else?
Is there a particular bearing that spins - like the front or rear of are they all random?

The issues arent just spinning.
In my case and that of many others, the cam bearings, whether 1 or more than 1 just walk out and can even remove themselves entirely from their hole.
I was very fortunate to discover it with mine by accident, as I had stripped the engine to do other work, and the front cam bearing was almost completely out.
Oil pressure was still decent, although I'd never paid close attention to it, as it had never really given any cause for concern
Clearly if it had come completely out, the chain end of the shaft would ahve had no support, with potentially disastrous consequences.

I may be able to mic the one all the way in the back as that is the only one still intact anymore. I'll also mic the stock cam on that journal and my tick cam that is destroyed. Think that last journal is ok tho. I'll check it out in a little while. I'm assuming this is only happening with aftermarket cams? Wonder y no cam vendors have chimed in on this as this should be concerning them. Unless we all didn't run enough oil in the pan ???

There is actually a lot of blocks with the factory cams that had the issue. The 5.3 I used to have showed more wear on the cam bearings than what I thought was normal.
Who knows....could more spring pressure load the cam against the journals more in some cases causing an issue? If there walking out like Stevie suggested that to me would indicate an improper press fit and then its all over. These seems more plausible to me. The question is though, do the aftermarket cam bearing companies (or GM afterwards) have this figured out, and replacement sets will fit a little more snug?
