Default Thoughts on Turbo Drain

I finished most of my setup, thinking the turbo drain wouldn't be an issue. Now it's looking like it's not sitting high enough. I've tried to gain as much clearance as possible. Ideas and past experience please chime in. I'm running -12 drain with Wolfe Racecract -12 drain and 90s on each end. The rubber hose is just makeshift. The turbo shaft is sitting several inches about the pan rain. On the stand the hose is only about a 1 degree slope of not parallel to the ground. With the engine mounted that should throw about a 3 degree downhill slope in it, but still probably isn't enough. I've read also must people want it above 6qts. Dropping a -12 bung down from the rail enough to get a clean weld get into that as you can see. What's everyone's opinion?

Pic of the water level where the bung needs to go with 6qts.

Outside placement. Don't have much room to go up any.

Previously had an STS rear mount setup. Definitely not going to run a scavenge setup. I'll scrap the whole merge pipe, intercooler piping etc, and start over before I do that.

You should be fine with that placement I've seen worst and haven't had any turbo's oiling up... Remember that 6 quarts are when engine is not running and will decrease while engine is running

When the motors in the car, it'll sit with a bit of a rear ward can't, not perfectly straight like in your pic. My drain line is not on much of an angle either honestly...possibly a tad more than yours, but it's close. I sometimes get a few puffs of smoke when braking up to a light or stop sign, but it's not anything to worry about IMO. Cars been going like that for 4 years and 5K street miles now. I'd almost prefer to locate the bung on the pan slightly lower...while the motor is running, your going to be sucking half that oil out of the pan anyways so the level will be much lower than with a "full" 6 quarts

I understand it's far from ideal. But if it'll work that would be great. Better than backing up to punt.

i ran in to a similar issue, ended up having to change the flange on the turbo to one that accepted a 1/2' npt then got a 1/2npt to 12an 45* fitting, it raised the line up about 2' over the the flange and 90 i had(same setup you have now) it was enough for me to consider it acceptable.

I think you will experience issues. the oil coming out is pretty frothed up and needs a straight shot and more angle to congeal and flow into the pan unobstructed.

I hear you about scavenge pumps, I also believe also that a good gravity drain is the way to go, but I think you may run into problems with the turbo mounted that low with 90 deg fittigngs

I try to make sure the turbos are about 6" above the pan drain plug and make the exit from the turbo a straight shot with a gradual bend.

the 90 deg stuff may give you some problems with oil foam "stacking up" and causing the oil to back up and push past the oil seals.

I run dual -10 90's on my turbos with no issues but i have a 4" drop on mine. I'm going to vote you'll run into issues as well.

While you have it apart and things are easy to get to, I'd raise the turbo 2" or so. Whats the ID on those pushlock fittings? I'd want a minimum of 3/4" ID on a setup like that. Mines only slightly better but I use a "BFD"

I get the hint. I better see if I can relocate the turbo or move it up.

If it's all built and ready to run, it would be daft not to try it.

I would agree only if he could take the car out and test it in the stripped down version that it is. If he had months of building still ahead of him and he was building the rest of the car off of the placement of the turbo i would re-do it.. In the end it would all depend on how hard it would be to go back in and raise up the turbo.
